(IN BRIEF) Colas, through its subsidiary GTOI – Les Grands Travaux de l’Océan Indien, will participate in the construction of the future Maternity and Children’s Ward at the Réunion University Hospital in Saint-Denis as part of a consortium led by DEMATHIEU BARD. The project is worth nearly €140 million, including around €50 million for GTOI, and is scheduled to begin in mid-2026, with commissioning expected in late 2029. The future BFPE will bring together women’s health, maternity and paediatric services that are currently distributed across several ageing facilities. Covering approximately 26,400 square metres over nine floors, the new building will include more than 200 beds and spaces, with departments for gynaecology, obstetrics, paediatrics, paediatric emergency care, neonatology and critical care. The project aims to improve healthcare access, patient comfort, care coordination and hospital efficiency, while supporting the wider modernisation of the Réunion University Hospital’s North and South sites.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 26-May-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Colas will take part in the construction of the future Maternity and Children’s Ward at the Réunion University Hospital in Saint-Denis through its subsidiary GTOI – Les Grands Travaux de l’Océan Indien. The project will be delivered as part of a consortium led by DEMATHIEU BARD and represents a major investment in healthcare infrastructure for Réunion.

The project is valued at nearly €140 million, with approximately €50 million allocated to GTOI. Work is expected to begin in mid-2026, with commissioning planned for late 2029. The future facility, known as BFPE, is designed to bring together healthcare services that are currently spread across several buildings that no longer fully meet current operational needs.

The Réunion University Hospital has awarded the contract for the design, construction, fitting out, upkeep and maintenance of the future BFPE to a consortium led by Demathieu Bard Construction. GTOI will act as co-contractor, alongside SCAU as architectural consultancy and Artelia – Oasis as engineering consultancy. The project is funded by the State, the Réunion Regional Authority, notably through ERDF funds, and the University Hospital.

The future Maternity and Children’s Ward will cover around 26,400 square metres across nine floors and will include more than 200 beds and spaces. It will bring together departments dedicated to women’s health, maternity care and paediatrics, including gynaecology, obstetrics, paediatrics, paediatric emergency care, neonatology and critical care.

The new facility will include modern technical platforms, more efficient patient pathways and improved logistics, medical and patient flows. These features are intended to strengthen the coordination of care, improve comfort for patients and families, and support more efficient hospital operations.

Structural work is scheduled to begin in mid-2026, with the building expected to be commissioned by the end of 2029. GTOI, which has operated for many years in Réunion and across the Indian Ocean region, will mobilise its teams and local partners to deliver the complex hospital project in line with quality, safety and operational continuity requirements.

“With the BFPE contract, we are putting our expertise as a construction company to work on a major project aimed at improving access to healthcare for women, parents and children in Réunion. Our teams and local partners will be fully occupied on this complex project, meeting its energy requirements and maintaining service continuity,” said Jean-Christophe Deux, Chief Executive Officer of GTOI – Les Grands Travaux de l’Océan Indien.

Thierry Meline, Executive Vice President of Colas France and Indian Ocean, said the project reflects the group’s ability to support public sector clients in major infrastructure transformation projects. “This project demonstrates the ability of Colas and its subsidiaries to support major public sector clients in the sustainable transformation of their infrastructure. By enhancing the provision of hospital care in Réunion, the BFPE fits in with our ambition to contribute to the sustainable development of the regions where we operate,” he said.

The BFPE forms part of a broader programme to modernise the North and South sites of the Réunion University Hospital. GTOI has already contributed to several major hospital projects, including at the Saint-Pierre site, and will draw on its local expertise and understanding of healthcare infrastructure requirements to support the construction and operation of the new facility.
