BASF’s Digital Venture “Tracingo” to Help Logistics Companies Achieve Greater Efficiency and Transparency

Eycke-Christian Dörre, Managing Director Services at THIELMANN, Harald Borgholte, Divisional Digital Officer at BASF’s Coatings division and Patrick Franke, Managing Director NXTGN, sign the Joint Development Agreement.

(IN BRIEF) BASF, THIELMANN, and NXTGN have signed a Joint Development Agreement to develop a product called “Tracingo” that will track intermediate bulk containers (IBC) using IoT sensors and acoustic signals. The product will be integrated into NXTGN’s “ibc.digital” platform, which will allow forwarding companies and manufacturers to track and document the location, fill level, and conditions of their containers in real-time. The solution aims to provide logistics companies with a reliable basis for making decisions on resource planning, maintenance, and traceability. The partnership aims to drive digitalization in logistics and help customers achieve greater transparency and efficiency.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 25-Apr-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF (ETR: BAS), the world’s largest chemical producer, THIELMANN, and NXTGN have entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to establish a strategic partnership for intermediate bulk container (IBC) tracking. The partnership will focus on the technical and commercial development of the “Tracingo” product, developed by BASF’s Coatings division, for level measurement and location analysis of IBCs. The product will be integrated into NXTGN’s “ibc.digital” platform, allowing forwarding companies and manufacturers to track and document the location, fill level, and conditions of their containers in real-time.

The solution is based on patented technology that uses acoustic signals and IoT sensors to accurately measure IBC location, fill level, shock load, temperature, and contamination data. The collected data is processed and displayed on a web-based dashboard, enabling logistics companies to make informed decisions about resource planning, maintenance, and traceability. The partners are also preparing the sensors for ATEX certification to meet the highest safety standards.

“Digitalization is one of our approaches for continuous growth and more efficiency. We not only develop coating solutions, but also intelligent digital solutions that offer customers added value,” said Harald Borgholte, Divisional Digital Officer at BASF’s Coatings division. “In the cooperation with THIELMANN and NXTGN, we serve a completely new industry: logistics. I am pleased to see how a business model has emerged from a user problem in our units and how we are now working together as partners to bring the product to the next level.”

Eycke-Christian Dörre, Managing Director for Services at THIELMANN, said: “We support our customers with optimal services such as the collection and delivery of containers, cleaning and maintenance. Supported by digital technologies, we are also addressing issues such as tracking and smart fleet management, so that the life cycles of our products are transparent for our customers and for us. We look forward to further developing these services with NXTGN and BASF as a strong partner.”

Patrick Franke, Managing Director at NXTGN, said: “Real-time tracking and monitoring of IBCs is key to meeting the ever-increasing demands for supply chain security, sustainability and efficiency. IoT enables us to overcome these complex challenges. The development of a marketable solution together with BASF and THIELMANN reflects the technological expertise of all parties involved as well as our company motto: from sensor to business model.”

The project started as a user-driven initiative from BASF’s Logistics and Container Management at the Münster site, which collaborated with the company’s Digital Incubation Unit to develop and validate the digital business model. THIELMANN and NXTGN have been working together for several years in the field of container tracking using IoT technology. BASF Coatings remains an important innovation driver in the project, while NXTGN will lead further product development and THIELMANN will contribute its expertise on IBCs and customer requirements and act as a sales partner.

The partnership aims to drive digitalization in logistics and help customers achieve greater transparency and efficiency. The development of the tracking solution will enable logistics companies to optimize their fleet management and make cost-saving decisions.
