(PRESS RELEASE) COLOGNE, 15-Mar-2022 — /EuropaWire/ — Ed. Züblin AG, one of Germany’s largest construction companies and part of STRABAG Group, and OTTO WULFF (Otto Wulff Bauunternehmung GmbH), a Hamburg based third-generation family run real estate business, have announced that their joint venture has been contacted by the City of Hamburg, represented by SBH / Schulbau Hamburg to design and build the Struenseestraße school campus in Altona, one of the largest and most ambitious school construction projects in Hamburg. The complex project, valued at high double-digit million range, includes the final design, execution planning and turnkey construction of three schools with space for more than 2,000 students on the 28,500 m² site between Struenseestraße and Königstraße by the 2025/2026 school year. The Struensee Gymnasium and the Deutsch-Französisches Gymnasium will move together into one large new school building. A second new school building will be occupied by the all-day An der Elbe primary school. Also being built on the campus are two sports halls and extensively landscaped outdoor spaces.

Once the planning and design has been completed, construction work by the joint venture project team will begin in the summer of 2023. The new buildings are to be opened in a staggered manner within just under two years, with full completion of the school campus planned for mid-May 2025. One of the major challenges in the project is the damping of sound transmission through the intersecting S-Bahn tunnel.

School senator: “Project with great appeal for the district.”

“The spacious Struenseestraße school campus will have a positive impact on the entire district. I am very pleased that by hiring a general contractor who is also very experienced in school construction, and also has roots in Hamburg, we have reached an important milestone towards the realisation of this very special project with great appeal,” explained Hamburg’s school senator Ties Rabe.

“This school campus is a lighthouse project for Hamburg-Altona. Together with our joint venture partner, we are pleased about the trust the city has placed in the competence of our partnership, which has already proven itself several times in school construction. We are happy to accept the challenges of this project, which also has an ambitious schedule,” said Thomas Klötzer, technical manager of the business unit Turnkey Construction Hamburg/Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania at ZÜBLIN’s Subdivision North.

“The two schools will find their new home in a large, shared building in the middle of the campus, including a cafeteria and auditorium. A three-field sports hall is being built right next door. This will not only be used by the students but will also be available to sports clubs such as the Altona Gymnastics Association or the district’s wheelchair sports,” says Stefan Wulff, managing partner of OTTO WULFF.

The new three-storey building for the all-day An der Elbe primary school is being constructed in the direct vicinity of the Schleepark and will be complemented by a separate two-storey sports hall. In addition to the playground, the area also includes a school pond and a vegetable garden. The appearance of the new buildings is defined by a convex clay tile façade – coloured red for the secondary school building and green for the primary school.

Certification to DGNB Gold standard planned

The school campus with a total gross floor area of 28,600 m2 was designed by rohdecan Architekten of Dresden. All buildings and the outdoor areas will be completely barrier-free. A central focus in the project is on implementation according to aspects of sustainable design and construction. The buildings will be certified according to the DGNB Gold standard.

The joint venture of ZÜBLIN and OTTO WULFF has already successfully built numerous new vocational schools in Hamburg in recent years. And just recently, both companies, working in a similar constellation, were also awarded the contract for a large school construction project in Berlin.
