Strategic Partnership Between Alfa Laval and ArianeGroup Targets Efficient Liquid Hydrogen Transfer for Mobility Applications

(IN BRIEF) Alfa Laval and ArianeGroup have signed a co-development agreement to industrialise a liquid hydrogen trailer pump, building on a memorandum signed in December 2024. The project aims to address critical challenges in liquid hydrogen logistics by enabling safer, more efficient, and more reliable transfer from production sites to distribution hubs and refuelling stations. Designed for extreme cryogenic conditions, the pump is expected to reduce hydrogen losses and improve operational efficiency, supporting the growth of hydrogen mobility and low-carbon energy systems.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUND, 27-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Alfa Laval and ArianeGroup have formalised their collaboration with the signing of a co-development agreement to design, develop, test, and industrialise a dedicated liquid hydrogen trailer pump. Announced during the Hyvolution trade show, the agreement builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 1 December 2024 and marks a transition from concept development to concrete industrial execution.

The joint programme focuses on delivering a cryogenic pump specifically engineered for liquid hydrogen trailers, addressing a critical gap in current hydrogen logistics. The solution is designed to enable safer, more efficient, and more reliable transfer of liquid hydrogen from production sites to distribution hubs and refuelling stations, supporting the rapid expansion of hydrogen mobility.

The trailer pump is being developed to meet stringent industrial requirements, including compactness, operational efficiency, reliability, safety, and ease of use. Operating under extreme cryogenic conditions, the system is intended to significantly reduce hydrogen losses caused by heating during unloading. Until now, the absence of dedicated pumping solutions has meant that liquid hydrogen trailers are often unloaded without pumps, leading to inefficiencies and material losses that limit the scalability of hydrogen transport.

By combining Alfa Laval’s expertise in cryogenic fluid handling with ArianeGroup’s space-proven liquid hydrogen technologies, the partners aim to deliver a solution capable of meeting the demanding needs of industrial hydrogen markets. The project responds directly to the challenges associated with liquid hydrogen handling, particularly for heavy-duty and long-range mobility applications where hydrogen is expected to play a key role in future low-carbon energy systems.

The agreement reflects a shared ambition to apply advanced cryogenic technologies beyond the space sector and into terrestrial energy applications. Through this collaboration, Alfa Laval and ArianeGroup are positioning the liquid hydrogen trailer pump as a foundational component of a more robust, efficient, and scalable hydrogen ecosystem.
