Rheinmetall Secures Multimillion-Euro Order for High-Voltage Electric Coolant Pumps from Major Automaker

(IN BRIEF) Rheinmetall has secured a significant order worth millions of euros for high-voltage electric coolant pumps from a major international automaker. The pumps will be used in the customer’s 800V architecture and offer advantages such as low friction, long service life, and maximum safety for high-voltage e-motors and inverters. With 800V technology becoming the industry standard in e-mobility, Rheinmetall’s innovative solution provides greater efficiency and space savings. This order strengthens Rheinmetall’s position in the sustainable fuel cell technology market, and further orders are anticipated in the future. Rheinmetall’s Sensors and Actuators division is known for its expertise in thermal and fluid management applications, delivering solutions that optimize performance and efficiency in modern mobility.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 12-Jun-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Rheinmetall AG (ETR: RHM), a German integrated technology group active in the automotive and defence industries, has been awarded a significant order for hundreds of thousands of CWA2000 high-voltage electric coolant pumps, with a contract value in the two-digit million-euro range. As a Tier 1 supplier, Rheinmetall emerged victorious in a competitive bidding process against well-established rivals. Production is scheduled to commence in 2026, with deliveries spread over a six-year period.

The order comes from one of the world’s largest international automakers, which has selected the high-voltage electric coolant pumps for integration into its 800V architecture. This component, designed as a glandless pump, offers several advantages. Its absence of a mechanical seal ensures low friction and a prolonged service life. The design eliminates the risk of leakage into the electronics or the environment, guaranteeing maximum safety for high-voltage e-motors and inverters. The internal electronics incorporate intelligent thermal management, optimizing cooling capacity and enhancing both operating range and passenger comfort.

In the e-mobility sector, 800V technology has emerged as the industry standard alongside 400V. With double the charge capacity, 800V systems provide greater day-to-day utility and higher efficiency due to reduced electric resistance. The technology also enables the use of thinner cables, resulting in space and weight savings, as well as reducing the need for expensive metals like copper. Additionally, the reduced heat loss allows for a more compact and efficient cooling system design.

This new order further solidifies Rheinmetall’s presence in the promising market for sustainable fuel cell technology, with additional orders expected in the future.

Rheinmetall’s Sensors and Actuators division is renowned for its exceptional expertise in thermal and fluid management applications in the mobility sector and heavy engineering. The division comprises five business units – Actuators, Air Emission Systems, Commercial Diesel Systems, Pump Technology, and Solenoid Valves. With a comprehensive product portfolio that includes exhaust gas recirculation systems, flow control and regulator valves, solenoid valves, actuators, valve train systems, and oil, water, and vacuum pumps, Rheinmetall provides solutions to address key challenges in modern mobility such as downsizing, emission reduction, increased efficiency, and performance optimization. These solutions cater to a wide range of automotive applications, from light-duty to heavy-duty vehicles, as well as industrial and off-road applications.
