Nokia to Modernise Orange Belgium Fixed and Mobile Transport Infrastructure With High-Capacity Optical Platform

(IN BRIEF) Orange Belgium has chosen Nokia as the exclusive supplier for a multi-year upgrade of its transport infrastructure in Belgium. The project will combine the operator’s fixed and mobile transport networks into one converged optical platform designed to support rising bandwidth demand, 5G services, AI-driven applications, cloud workloads, remote work, streaming, gaming and future machine-to-machine connectivity. Nokia will provide its 1830 PSS optical platform, WaveSuite automation software, GMPLS control-plane capabilities, synchronisation management and high-capacity thin transponders. The modernised network will support services from 1G to 400G and beyond, while helping Orange Belgium improve resilience, simplify operations and deliver new services more quickly.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 3-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Orange Belgium has selected Nokia as the sole supplier for a multi-year transformation of its transport network, bringing fixed and mobile connectivity together on a single converged optical infrastructure across Belgium.

The upgrade is intended to provide Orange Belgium with a more scalable, resilient and secure foundation for rising demand from AI-driven applications, cloud services, video streaming, gaming, remote work and next-generation business services. It will also support the operator’s continued development of 5G connectivity, AI-scale computing requirements and quantum-resilient security capabilities.

Under the project, Nokia will modernise the optical transport environment that carries Orange Belgium’s fixed and mobile traffic from customer equipment through metro access and backbone networks. The upgraded infrastructure will support services ranging from 1G to 400G and beyond.

The programme will use Nokia’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch platform as the backbone for converged connectivity. It will be the first deployment of Nokia’s high-capacity 1830 PSS platform for core optical transport within an Orange affiliate.

Orange Belgium will also use Nokia’s WaveSuite automation software to streamline network management, simplify operational processes and accelerate the rollout of new services. The platform is designed to enhance network efficiency and reduce complexity as traffic volumes and service requirements continue to expand.

The deployment will include end-to-end synchronisation management alongside Orange Belgium’s existing Nokia radio access network environment. The new architecture will also incorporate a GMPLS control plane to strengthen resilience, as well as thin transponders based on the latest 1830 PSS technology.

By combining previously separate fixed and mobile transport systems, Orange Belgium aims to improve operational control, speed up service delivery and provide a more seamless connectivity experience for consumer and enterprise customers.
