New high-capacity Cable Lay Vessel to strengthen Boskalis position in offshore wind and interconnector markets

(IN BRIEF) Boskalis has announced a major investment in a new 24,000-ton high-capacity Cable Lay Vessel aimed at supporting the growing offshore wind and interconnector markets. Scheduled to enter service in 2029, the vessel will feature two 12,000-ton cable carousels designed for long-distance HVDC cable installations with fewer offshore joints. Boskalis said the investment responds to rising global demand for electricity grid infrastructure linked to decarbonization and renewable energy expansion. The Dutch offshore services company, which has completed more than 140 subsea cable projects over the past 15 years, said the new vessel will enhance its integrated offshore energy capabilities and support sustainable infrastructure projects worldwide.

(PRESS RELEASE) PAPENDRECHT, 18-May-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Boskalis has announced plans to invest in a new high-capacity Cable Lay Vessel (CLV) designed to support the growing global demand for offshore power infrastructure linked to renewable energy development. The vessel, which is expected to enter service in 2029, will strengthen the company’s position in the offshore energy market and support the expansion of interconnector and offshore wind transmission projects requiring long-distance high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable installations.

The investment reflects increasing demand for robust electricity grid infrastructure driven by electrification, decarbonization targets and energy security objectives. According to Boskalis, cross-border interconnectors and offshore wind farms increasingly require long-distance subsea cable systems capable of transmitting large volumes of renewable electricity between countries and offshore generation sites.

The new vessel will feature two cable carousels with a combined capacity of 24,000 tons, including a concentric carousel arrangement designed to facilitate the installation of longer continuous cable sections. Boskalis said the configuration will reduce the number of offshore cable joints required during installation, helping improve efficiency while also supporting long-term cable reliability and integrity.

Boskalis has been active in the subsea cable installation market for more than 15 years and has participated in over 140 cable-related offshore projects worldwide. The company currently operates three cable lay vessels, a trenching support vessel and a portfolio of specialized trenching equipment used in offshore energy infrastructure projects.

The company highlighted that its integrated offshore capabilities — including survey work, dredging, seabed preparation, cable installation and rock placement — allow it to deliver end-to-end project solutions while reducing operational and interface risks for clients. Boskalis said the new CLV will play an important role in supporting the continued expansion of renewable energy infrastructure globally.
