Kapsch TrafficCom delivers AP-8 toll modernization projects in Gipuzkoa to improve travel efficiency and payment security

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch TrafficCom has completed the modernization of toll plazas at Irún Ventas, Irún M/O, and Orio on the AP-8 motorway in Gipuzkoa, Spain, in partnership with Construcciones Amenabar and Bidegi. The projects, finished on schedule by November 2024, expanded capacity to 24 lanes, introduced greater automation, and enabled multiple payment options including mobile, contactless card, and cash. The upgrades reduce waiting times, improve traffic flow, and lower payment fraud risks for drivers, benefiting over two million residents and millions of tourists annually. With features such as a gantry for future Multi Lane Free-Flow technology and more user-friendly interfaces, the improvements set the stage for advanced tolling systems. These projects build on Kapsch TrafficCom’s prior successes in the region and reinforce its role as a leading provider of sustainable transport solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 3-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch TrafficCom has successfully delivered two major toll infrastructure renovation projects on the AP-8 motorway in Gipuzkoa, Northern Spain. Executed in collaboration with Construcciones Amenabar, S.A. on behalf of Bidegi, the provincial infrastructure agency, the projects represent a significant step in modernizing toll operations to improve mobility for both residents and tourists.

The upgrades, which included the Irún Ventas, Irún M/O, and Orio toll stations, provide motorists with a more efficient and secure travel experience. With 24 renovated lanes in total, the system offers greater capacity, reducing waiting times and improving traffic flow. Drivers now benefit from faster, more reliable trips, along with a broader range of payment options that lower fraud risks for both users and operators.

Carolin Treichl, EVP EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom, commented: “We are delighted to see these projects realized and to contribute to the modernization of toll infrastructure in Gipuzkoa. By significantly reducing waiting times, we are improving everyday travel for citizens and the millions of tourists who visit the Basque Country each year.”

Key improvements include enhanced automation and flexibility in payment processing. The renovated toll plazas can now operate dynamically through TAG device reading, manually with a toll collector, or automatically via machines. Drivers may pay using mobile devices, contactless credit cards (EMV standard), or cash. The new interactive elements are designed to be more user-friendly and efficient, contributing to smoother journeys and shorter toll transactions.

Specific station upgrades are as follows:

  • Irún Ventas: 8 lanes, including 2 bi-directional lanes, with a newly installed gantry designed to support a potential transition to Multi Lane Free-Flow (MLFF) tolling technology.

  • Irún M/O: 10 lanes.

  • Orio: 6 lanes, including 2 bi-directional lanes.

Completed by the end of November 2024, the projects build on Kapsch TrafficCom’s established presence in Gipuzkoa, where it previously modernized the Irún Barrera and Zarautz toll plazas in 2019 and 2022. Together, these projects address the growing demands of heavy traffic in the region and lay the foundation for future technological innovation in tolling.
