(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 2-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch TrafficCom is proud to announce the opening of Complete 540 Phase 1, an extension of the Triangle Expressway in North Carolina, USA.

The extension, which opened for traffic at 6 a.m. on September 25th, enhances regional connectivity and is set to significantly reduce travel times for both commuters and residents. In 2017, the North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) selected Kapsch TrafficCom to implement a comprehensive, state-of-the-art tolling solution aimed at modernizing this critical expressway in Raleigh. With this project, Kapsch has helped NCTA become the first multi-protocol toll facility in the United States, facilitating both the expressway extension and the overall completion of the 540 project.

JB Kendrick, President of Kapsch TrafficCom North America, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s completion: “We take pride in our role in this significant development, which will see tens of thousands of drivers utilizing the roadway daily. Our longstanding partnership with NCTA, founded on innovation, has led to this exciting moment. The decision to implement a design that eliminates in-pavement sensors is a forward-thinking approach, reflecting the Authority’s commitment to leveraging technology for the benefit of road users and maintenance staff alike.”

J.J. Eden, Executive Director of NCTA, shared in the excitement, stating, “The anticipation surrounding this project has been palpable. The Triangle Expressway is poised to play a crucial role in accommodating the region’s planned growth and development, providing a reliable and efficient transportation option for everyone.”

As part of the project, Kapsch TrafficCom was tasked with supplying transponders and automatic vehicle identification (AVI) readers for twelve toll zones. The equipment ensures seamless and barrier-free tolling for all drivers, utilizing Kapsch’s VRx cameras and nVDC vision-based vehicle detection and classification technology.

Kapsch is responsible for the design, installation, and integration of the entire tolling system and will continue to provide maintenance and operational services for eight years following the opening. Notably, this pioneering system will deliver all-electronic (open road tolling) functionality without the need for in-pavement sensors, resulting in significant long-term maintenance cost savings for the Authority.
