Insurance Europe Hails Lloyd’s CEO Patrick Tiernan as New RAB Vice-Chair

(IN BRIEF) Patrick Tiernan, CEO of Lloyd’s, has been named Vice-Chair of the Reinsurance Advisory Board (RAB), succeeding John Neal. Tiernan’s background as Lloyd’s Chief of Markets and roles at Aviva, StarStone and Zurich position him to guide the RAB through rising geopolitical, climate and technological challenges. He will work alongside Chair Thierry Léger and industry peers to promote a robust, innovative and globally accessible reinsurance market. The RAB—backed by Insurance Europe’s secretariat—unites Gen Re, Hannover Re, Lloyd’s, Munich Re, PartnerRe, SCOR and Swiss Re in advocating for regulatory policies that support efficient worldwide risk transfer.

(PRESS RELEASE) BRUSSELS, 24-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Insurance Europe, which provides the secretariat for the Reinsurance Advisory Board (RAB), today celebrates the appointment of Patrick Tiernan—Chief Executive Officer of Lloyd’s—as its new Vice-Chair. Tiernan succeeds John Neal, who stepped down upon leaving the Lloyd’s CEO role. With a distinguished career that includes serving as Lloyd’s Chief of Markets and senior leadership positions at Aviva, StarStone and Zurich, Tiernan brings deep expertise in both regulatory matters and reinsurance operations.

His tenure begins as the global reinsurance industry confronts rising geopolitical volatility, accelerating climate risks and rapid digital transformation. The RAB remains focused on promoting an open, internationally integrated market capable of adapting to these emerging challenges.

“I’m honoured to step into the Vice-Chair role and advance the RAB’s mission of ensuring reinsurance stays resilient, innovative and accessible worldwide,” said Mr Tiernan. “I look forward to partnering with Chair Thierry Léger, fellow board members and stakeholders across Europe to bolster our industry’s ability to safeguard society in an increasingly complex risk landscape.”

Composed of chairs and chief executives from seven leading reinsurers—Gen Re, Hannover Re, Lloyd’s, Munich Re, PartnerRe, SCOR and Swiss Re—the RAB advocates for regulatory frameworks that sustain a competitive and stable reinsurance sector. It champions efficient global risk transfer through both traditional reinsurance and insurance-linked capital solutions.
