Eni and NOC Start Sabratha Compression Project to Increase Bahr Essalam Gas Output

(IN BRIEF) Eni and the Libyan National Oil Corporation have started production through the Sabratha Compression Project at the offshore Bahr Essalam gas field. The project includes a new 1,600-tonne compression module with capacity of about 440 million standard cubic feet per day, allowing production to continue at lower reservoir pressure and helping offset natural field decline. The development is expected to add around 800 million cubic metres of gas annually, supporting Libya’s electricity generation, energy security and gas exports to Italy via the Greenstream pipeline. Eni and NOC are also progressing the Bouri Gas Utilization Project and the Structures A&E offshore gas development.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 29-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Eni and Libya’s National Oil Corporation have started production through the Sabratha Compression Project, an offshore development designed to maintain and increase gas output from the Bahr Essalam field.

The project has been developed through Mellitah Oil & Gas, the joint venture between Eni and NOC. Bahr Essalam is located around 100 kilometres offshore and is one of the key gas-producing assets supporting Libya’s domestic energy supply.

At the centre of the development is a new 1,600-tonne compression module installed on the Sabratha platform. The module includes new compression trains with a combined capacity of approximately 440 million standard cubic feet per day.

The new equipment allows gas production to continue under lower-pressure conditions, helping to offset the natural decline of the Bahr Essalam field and maximise recovery from the reservoir.

Eni said the project is expected to add around 800 million cubic metres of gas production annually, together with associated condensate volumes. The additional supply will support electricity generation in Libya, contribute to national energy security and help maintain exports to Italy through the Greenstream pipeline.

The start-up marks the delivery of a complex offshore project in a challenging operating environment. Eni and NOC said the development strengthens the resilience of Libya’s gas infrastructure and supports the continued development of the country’s energy sector.

Two further strategic gas projects are also under development in Libya. Tie-in and commissioning work is under way for the Bouri Gas Utilization Project following the installation of the Bouri Gas Recovery Module.

In parallel, the Structures A&E project is progressing to develop two offshore gas fields.

Eni has operated in Libya since 1959 and remains the country’s largest international energy operator. In 2025, the company reported equity production of approximately 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in Libya.

The three projects currently under execution represent total planned investment of around USD 10 billion and form part of the companies’ broader effort to support gas production, domestic power supply and export capacity.
