EIB and Airbus Strengthen European Aerospace Innovation Through Landmark Long-Term Loan

(IN BRIEF) The European Investment Bank has signed a €1 billion loan with Airbus as the first tranche of a record €3 billion corporate financing envelope. The funding will support Airbus research and development through 2030 in commercial aviation, defence, security and space-related technologies, with projects located in France, Germany and Spain. The financing is intended to strengthen Europe’s aerospace industrial base, technological sovereignty and competitiveness in critical technologies. Structured with long maturities and flexible terms, the wider facility will help Airbus fund advanced manufacturing, decarbonisation, connected systems and next-generation aerospace capabilities.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUXEMBOURG, 29-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Investment Bank and Airbus have signed a €1 billion loan agreement to support long-term research and development across the European aerospace sector.

The financing is the first tranche of a €3 billion lending envelope approved by the EIB for Airbus, described by the bank as its largest corporate financing package to date. The funding will support planned investments through 2030 in technologies and integrated systems for commercial aviation, defence and security applications.

Projects supported by the financing will be located in France, Germany and Spain, reinforcing aerospace and defence ecosystems across the three countries while helping Airbus continue investment in advanced manufacturing, next-generation capabilities, connected systems and decarbonisation technologies.

The EIB said the agreement is intended to strengthen Europe’s technological autonomy, industrial capabilities and long-term economic resilience at a time of heightened global competition in critical technologies.

Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank, said the transaction demonstrates the EIB Group’s commitment to supporting European technological leadership, industrial competitiveness and economic security through financing at scale.

She said the operation was approved within approximately six months of the request, reflecting the ability of European institutions to move quickly in support of major strategic industrial investments.

The €1 billion loan forms part of a wider €3 billion facility structured to provide Airbus with long-term and flexible financing for major research programmes. The EIB said the extended maturity profile will give the company predictable funding as it advances innovation across commercial aviation, defence and space.

Thomas Toepfer, Chief Financial Officer of Airbus, said the facility strengthens the strategic partnership between Airbus and the EIB. He said the financing will support research activities that contribute to European industrial competitiveness while giving Airbus greater flexibility to manage its balance sheet and sustain long-term investment in aerospace innovation.

Airbus said its innovation pipeline includes advanced manufacturing technologies, decarbonisation solutions and connected ecosystems intended to support future capabilities across aviation, defence and space.

The agreement was signed in Brussels in the presence of Airbus Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Faury and EIB Vice-Presidents Robert de Groot, Ambroise Fayolle and Nicola Beer.

For the EIB, the financing falls under the TechEU initiative, which is designed to accelerate investment in critical technologies and strengthen the European Union’s industrial and technological position.

The loan provides Airbus with long-term funding to continue developing strategic technologies while supporting Europe’s broader ambitions in aerospace innovation, defence readiness, industrial resilience and low-carbon aviation.
