Enel Green Power Sets Ambitious Goal to Reach 75 GW of Renewables by 2025

Enel Green Power Sets Ambitious Goal to Reach 75 GW of Renewables by 2025

(IN BRIEF) Enel Green Power (EGP) set a new record in 2022 by building 5,223 MW of new renewable capacity, including 387 MW of battery energy storage systems. The new capacity includes over 80 plants, mainly solar and wind. EGP also set a record for new renewable capacity under construction and energy generated from renewable sources. The company has reached 59 GW of renewable capacity, including storage systems and operates 14.7 GW of renewable energy plants in Italy. Salvatore Bernabei, CEO of EGP, stated their goal is to reach 75 GW of renewable capacity by 2025. The new capacity is geographically distributed across Europe, Latin America, North America, and Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The new renewable capacity will generate approximately 13 TWh per year and avoid 9 million tons of CO2 emissions. This marks another step in the Enel Group’s decarbonization roadmap to achieve zero emissions by 2040.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 30-Jan-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Enel Green Power S.p.A., an Italian multinational renewable energy corporation, has set new records in the renewable energy sector by building 5,223 MW of new capacity in 2022. This includes 387 MW of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), representing an increase compared to 2021 figures. Over 80 new plants were built, with a majority of them being solar (2,622 MW) and wind (2,160 MW) based.

In addition to the new capacity built in 2022, EGP also holds the record for new renewable capacity¹ under construction, with 67 plants for a total of approximately 7,200 MW, including 900 MW of BESS. The energy generated from renewable sources reached an all-time high, with 124 TWh in total, of which 65.9 TWh came from wind and solar, 52 TWh from hydro, and 6 TWh from geothermal. The pipeline of projects under development reached 455 GW, up 24% from the previous year, including renewable energy plants, BESS, and capacity already in execution.

With these new plants, EGP is now the world’s largest private player in the renewable energy sector, with 59 GW of renewable capacity, including storage systems. In Italy, EGP operates 14.7 GW of renewable energy plants, including BESS, producing 18.3 TWh of energy in 2022, including 12 TWh from hydro, 1.3 TWh from wind and solar, and 5 TWh from geothermal.

Salvatore Bernabei, CEO of EGP, commented: “In 2022, Enel Green Power reaffirmed its position as a global leader in the renewable segment. Despite all the challenges we faced this last year, which was marked by geopolitical conflicts and a worsening macroeconomic environment, we are continuing to grow with the ambitious goal of reaching 75 GW of renewable capacity and battery energy storage systems by 2025 while keeping a strong focus on safety, people and the environment in which our plants are located.

In the next few months, Enel Green Power will also strengthen its commitment in the industrial supply chain: in fact, the 3Sun photovoltaic module factory in Catania will become a Gigafactory as early as July 2024, and its annual production capacity will increase from the current 200 MW to 3 GW.

As for our achievements and the goals ahead of us, we would like to thank once again all our colleagues, our partners, and the communities who embrace our projects and every day help us achieve our mission statement: to promote progress with sustainable energy.

In the next few months, EGP will also enhance its commitment to the industrial supply chain with its 3Sun photovoltaic module factory in Catania becoming a Gigafactory by July 2024, increasing its annual production capacity from 200 MW to 3 GW.

The new renewable capacity is geographically distributed across Europe, Latin America, North America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. It is capable of generating 13 TWh per year, avoiding the emission of 9 million tons of CO2 and eliminating the need to purchase 2.9 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

This new record marks another step in the Enel Group’s decarbonization roadmap, which aims to achieve zero emissions by 2040 and has recently been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The Group’s decarbonization efforts in 2022 also involved shutting down the 320 MW Bocamina II coal-fired plant in Chile.

EGP would like to thank its colleagues, partners, and communities for their support and contributions to achieving its mission of promoting progress with sustainable energy.

¹Including capacity built in companies managed under the Stewardship model and power upgrades.
