Alfa Laval Leads the Way in Methanol Transition with Landmark Project for Chinese Shipowner

(IN BRIEF) Alfa Laval, a leading provider of heat transfer and fluid handling technologies, is making significant progress in the marine industry’s fuel transition by securing a pioneering project for the installation of its methanol solutions on four container vessels for a Chinese shipowner. This landmark achievement highlights Alfa Laval’s expertise in methanol-driven technologies and its collaboration with key stakeholders in the industry. The project represents several industry firsts, including the shipyard’s construction of methanol-capable vessels and the delivery of engines for methanol-fueled ships. Alfa Laval’s FCM Methanol system, known for its adaptability and safety features, will be integrated into the vessels’ engines, contributing to the decarbonization efforts in the maritime sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUND, 26-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Alfa Laval, a world leader in heat transfer, centrifugal separation and fluid handling, continues to drive the marine industry’s transition to alternative fuels with its methanol solutions. The company has secured a groundbreaking project with a Chinese shipowner for the installation of Alfa Laval’s FCM Methanol, the low-flashpoint fuel supply system (LFSS), on board four mega container vessels. This project marks a significant achievement for Alfa Laval, the shipowner, the shipyard, and the engine designer.

The order for FCM Methanol (LFSS) is a major step forward in Alfa Laval’s methanol journey. The four vessels, currently under construction at a Chinese shipyard, will be equipped with two-stroke WinGD methanol engines and four-stroke Wärtsilä methanol engines. The FCM Methanol system will be integrated into the WinGD main engines and Wärtsilä auxiliary engines, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2024.

“We are honoured to have been selected to deliver the methanol fuel supply systems for these pioneering methanol-fuelled vessels,” says Viktor Friberg, Head of Marine Separation & Fuel Supply Systems, Alfa Laval. “This project exemplifies our commitment to bringing alternative fuels into the shipping industry. We see close cooperation with key stakeholders, such as shipowners, shipyards, engine designers and engineering companies, as a way forward to make meaningful progress towards decarbonization.”

Alfa Laval’s extensive experience in methanol technologies, strong service network, and after-sales support, coupled with close collaboration with the shipowner and shipyard, positioned the company as the preferred choice for this pioneering project.

With a relentless focus on driving decarbonization, Alfa Laval has continuously refined its technological expertise since 2015, actively developing innovative solutions for the methanol transition. The company’s deep understanding of methanol as a marine fuel and its proven track record in fuel supply systems were key factors in securing this project.

The Alfa Laval FCM Methanol is equipped with mature technologies and reliable automation, ensuring the safe and efficient supply of methanol within specified flow rate, pressure, temperature, and filtration parameters as required by the engine manufacturer. Its adaptability to various engine and vessel designs enables seamless installation and turnkey LFSS deliveries.

This landmark project is characterized by several notable firsts. It represents the first instance of a Chinese shipowner ordering methanol-capable vessels, the shipyard’s inaugural construction of such vessels, and WinGD’s delivery of engines for methanol-fueled ships. Additionally, Alfa Laval will provide a customized methanol fuel supply system, tailored to meet the specific requirements of these engines, marking a significant milestone for the company.
