Iberdrola’s Baltic Eagle Wind Farm Advances with Monopile Anchoring

(IN BRIEF) Iberdrola, in partnership with Van Oord, has successfully installed 50 monopiles for the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm. These vital components were manufactured by EEW SPC and transported to the construction site, anchored in the seabed to support wind turbines. The project, part of Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub initiative, aims to provide renewable energy to 475,000 households and reduce CO2 emissions by 800,000 tonnes annually. Baltic Eagle is on track for completion in 2024, contributing to Iberdrola’s integrated growth strategy in Germany. Iberdrola Deutschland, the company’s subsidiary, is actively engaged in renewable energy projects and tailored green energy solutions for various industries.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILBAO, 12-Sep-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Iberdrola, S.A. (BME: IBE), with more than 170 years of history, is a global leader in clean energy, grids and storage, a company that is today more solid, sustainable and diversified than ever, in collaboration with its partner Van Oord, has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm. Fifty monopiles have been successfully installed, marking a crucial step towards sustainable energy generation in the Baltic Sea. This endeavor is a testament to Iberdrola’s commitment to renewable energy and its role as a leader in the global energy transition.

The monopiles, crafted by the esteemed Rostock-based firm EEW SPC, were expertly transported from the port of Rostock to the Baltic Eagle offshore construction site. The precision positioning of these monopiles was achieved through the utilization of Van Oord’s heavy-lift installation vessel, Svanen. With diameters ranging from 8.75 to 9 meters and lengths spanning between 75 and 90 meters, these monopiles serve as the robust foundation upon which the wind turbines will securely stand, firmly anchored in the seabed.

“With the installation of the monopiles, we have reached another key milestone in the construction of Baltic Eagle,” commented Iris Stempfle, Managing Director of Iberdrola Germany’s Offshore Division. “Above all, I would like to thank the responsible teams very much for their unremitting efforts. Everyone went the necessary extra mile to be able to successfully complete this intensive project phase.”

Notably, the strategic location of EEW SPC’s production facilities in Rostock facilitated the seamless transportation of these crucial components to the wind farm. This collaborative effort spans multiple European countries, including Germany, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium, demonstrating the global reach of the Baltic Eagle project.

Iberdrola’s Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm boasts an impressive production capacity of 476 MW, poised to supply renewable energy to approximately 475,000 households and reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 800,000 tonnes annually. This transformative project is set to be fully operational by the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone in the company’s ambitious renewable energy portfolio.

Baltic Eagle stands as the second of three ambitious projects in Germany, with Iberdrola already operating the 350-MW Wikinger wind farm and actively developing the 300-MW Windanker project, anticipated for completion in 2026. Together, these offshore wind farms form Iberdrola’s visionary Baltic Hub, which is projected to have a total capacity exceeding 1.1 GW by 2026, representing a combined investment of approximately 3.7 billion euros.

This remarkable achievement aligns with Iberdrola’s comprehensive growth strategy in Germany, demonstrating the company’s commitment to its core market. Iberdrola aims to collaborate closely with key players in the German economy to support their climate targets with market-based solutions, including power purchase agreements (PPAs), green hydrogen generation, and trading activities.

Under the umbrella of Iberdrola Deutschland, the wholly owned subsidiary, Iberdrola has consolidated all its business activities in Germany. Headquartered in Berlin, Iberdrola Deutschland holds the distinction of being the largest operator of offshore wind farms in the German Baltic Sea. With a diverse portfolio spanning offshore and onshore wind farms, photovoltaic projects, and tailored green energy solutions for industrial and commercial clients, Iberdrola Deutschland is at the forefront of shaping a sustainable energy future in Germany and beyond.
