Iberdrola’s Ambitious Offshore Wind Project to Bring Clean Energy to New York City and Westchester County

The project will be developed by Iberdrola, through Avangrid, together with Edison Transmission, National Grid Ventures and Central Hudson Electric Transmission.

(IN BRIEF) Iberdrola, in collaboration with Avangrid and other partners, is set to establish new high-voltage transmission lines to deliver renewable offshore wind power from the Long Island grid to New York City and Westchester County. The project aims to strengthen Long Island’s electricity system, improve grid resilience, and support the state’s clean energy goals. With a focus on offshore wind, Iberdrola continues its investments in the United States, positioning itself as a leading renewable energy company. The initiative will contribute to job creation and the development of New York’s offshore wind industry.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILBAO, 27-Jun-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Iberdrola (BME: IBE), a Spanish multinational leader in clean energy and a pioneer in the deployment of smart grids, in collaboration with Avangrid, Edison Transmission, National Grid Ventures, and Central Hudson Electric Transmission, is set to deliver renewable offshore wind power from the Long Island grid to New York City and Westchester County. The ambitious project involves the installation of approximately 90 miles (about 150 km) of new high-voltage transmission lines that will run both underground and underwater.

By enhancing the backbone of Long Island’s electricity system, this initiative will improve grid resilience while enabling the transmission of clean, carbon-free energy across New York State. Furthermore, the project will contribute to the state’s ambitious energy transition goals and support job creation within the renewable energy sector, fostering the development of New York’s offshore wind industry.

Under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, New York aims to procure 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind energy by 2035. While a significant portion of this offshore wind generation will be connected to the Long Island grid, additional grid connections are necessary to supply clean, local power to consumers throughout the state.

Iberdrola, through Avangrid, has emerged as a key player in renewable energy, ranking as the third largest renewable energy company in the country based on installed capacity. With a portfolio of over 6,000 MW, the company is at the forefront of offshore wind development. Notable projects include the Vineyard Wind in Massachusetts, the largest commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the United States with a capacity of 806 MW, as well as the recent acquisition of PNM Resources in New Mexico and Texas.

The United States remains a primary focus for Iberdrola’s investments, with a dedicated investment of $21.5 billion until 2025. This substantial commitment is expected to result in a renewable capacity of approximately 10,000 MW, representing a remarkable 70% growth over the span of a decade. In the past three years alone (2020-2022), Iberdrola has invested $9 billion in the country.

In line with its commitment to modernization and digitalization, Iberdrola is also investing in the upgrade of the transmission and distribution grid to enhance service quality, strengthen resilience against extreme weather events, and facilitate the integration of more clean energy sources.
