Iberdrola’s Solar Community to Save Residents 40% on Energy Bills in Madrid

(IN BRIEF) Iberdrola has installed Spain’s largest solar community at the Nexum Retail Park in Fuenlabrada, Madrid. This solar initiative enables 1,100 nearby households to access 100% renewable energy, saving up to 40% on energy costs without needing individual installations. The project also includes electric vehicle charging stations and an innovative electrical system for maximum efficiency. The solar community consists of 1,350 panels, preventing 6,000 tons of CO2 emissions over 30 years. Iberdrola bears the investment cost to promote local renewable energy consumption. Additionally, the project supports the growth of electric mobility with multiple charging options and offers real-time electricity supply monitoring for increased efficiency and cost savings.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILBAO, 25-Oct-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Iberdrola, S.A. (BME: IBE), with more than 170 years of history, is a global leader in clean energy, grids and storage, a company that is today more solid, sustainable and diversified than ever, proudly announces the inauguration of Spain’s largest solar community, situated at the Nexum Retail Park in Fuenlabrada, Madrid. This groundbreaking initiative in self-consumption paves the way for 1,100 households within a two-kilometer radius of the center to access 100% renewable energy while enjoying potential savings of up to 40% on their energy bills, all without the need for individual installations or upfront investments.

The Nexum Retail Park project is a testament to Iberdrola’s commitment to multifaceted decarbonization efforts, spanning three crucial areas: the generation of local renewable energy through self-consumption, the promotion of electric mobility through the installation of charging infrastructure, and the creation of an innovative electrical system designed for maximum efficiency.

Comprising 1,350 solar panels atop three roofs within the business park, this solar community boasts a collective power output of 735 kilowatts, capable of generating over one million kilowatt-hours annually. This photovoltaic installation is expected to prevent the emission of 6,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next three decades.

Under this self-consumption model, Iberdrola takes the lead by investing in the infrastructure to facilitate local renewable energy utilization, a pivotal step in achieving the transition to sustainable energy sources and the broader decarbonization of the economy. Any resident of Fuenlabrada residing within 2 kilometers of the installation can readily partake in this initiative through the company’s dedicated website.

In alignment with its mission to decarbonize transportation and expedite the growth of electric mobility in Spain, the project also integrates an electric station featuring eight semi-fast recharging stations and five ultra-fast chargers. This infrastructure allows for the simultaneous charging of up to 26 vehicles, ensuring that users of the 13 dual-charging points have access to 100% green energy sourced from renewable generation.

Furthermore, Iberdrola’s meticulously designed electrical installation enables real-time monitoring of the shopping center’s electricity supply. Through advanced data analytics, the system can proactively identify anomalies, pinpoint opportunities for cost savings, monitor the decarbonization plan, and consistently maintain peak supply efficiency, ultimately resulting in reduced energy bills for all stakeholders.

“The Nexum Retail Park shopping centre has allowed us to create a pioneering project based on electrification as the best tool for decarbonisation. At Iberdrola, we promote and facilitate the development of these projects in collaboration with our customers and for the benefit of society, fostering the energy transition and the fight against climate change”, says Luis Buil, Director of Smart Solutions at Iberdrola.

“We are very pleased to inaugurate this new retail park in Fuenlabrada on 8 November. A convenience retail park, a good neighbour that will make life easier for the people of Fuenlabrada in many ways, with its leading brands, its 700 free parking spaces and, of course, thanks to the collaboration with Iberdrola, providing the resident community with a state-of-the-art sustainable infrastructure”, says Joel Franco, head of the Retail Park project.
