Italian Navy to receive refitted multi-role supply vessel as Fincantieri expands leadership in underwater defence technologies

(IN BRIEF) Fincantieri will supply a multi-role supply vessel to the Italian Navy, designed for high operational adaptability and underwater capability. The vessel will be refitted at the Palermo shipyard and upgraded into an advanced platform integrated within Italy’s defence system. As part of a wider national strategy to strengthen capability in the underwater domain, the project reflects Fincantieri’s growth into a systems-level orchestrator of surface-to-seabed naval technologies. CEO Pierroberto Folgiero highlighted the initiative as a demonstration of Fincantieri’s role in technological sovereignty and rapid mission-ready solutions, reinforcing leadership in innovation and flexibility for the Navy.

(PRESS RELEASE) TRIESTE, 28-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Fincantieri has been commissioned to supply a new supply vessel to the Italian Navy, strengthening national capability in maritime operations with a platform designed for high versatility — including advanced underwater activity. Developed through Fincantieri’s Underwater Technology Hub, the vessel is engineered to support multiple mission profiles, with internal configuration and available space enabling rapid reconfiguration for evolving operational needs.

The unit will undergo extensive refitting at the Palermo shipyard, where it will be transformed into a next-generation asset fully integrated into Italy’s defence and strategic maritime system. This project forms part of a wider national effort to reinforce Italy’s position in the increasingly critical underwater domain, adopting modular, scalable solutions capable of serving diverse mission scenarios.

Fincantieri continues to evolve toward a coordinating role across complex naval and subsea technologies — integrating hardware, software and systems designed to operate from surface to seabed. The initiative strengthens the company’s leadership in naval innovation, highlighting its capacity to deliver interoperable, secure and flexible systems that respond efficiently to national requirements while supporting long-term industrial and technological sovereignty.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, stated that the programme underscores the Group’s mission as a technological enabler for the country. He emphasised that versatility, speed and innovation stand at the core of Fincantieri’s approach as it expands capabilities for the Italian Navy, particularly in the underwater sphere, supporting sovereign technological growth in a domain that is becoming increasingly strategic for national security.
