Fincantieri’s Vard Secures €230 Million Contract to Build Cable-Laying Vessel for Prysmian Group

(IN BRIEF) Vard, a subsidiary of the Fincantieri Group, has secured a contract worth approximately €230 million from Prysmian Group, a global leader in energy and telecoms systems, to design and build a cable-laying vessel. This vessel, the third in a series for Prysmian, will be an evolution of the Monna Lisa class and will boast advanced cable installation solutions, including three carousels with a total capacity of 19,000 tonnes. With a length of approximately 185 meters and a breadth of about 34 meters, it will have one of the industry’s highest cable loading capacities, reducing transportation time and enhancing project efficiency. The vessel is set to be delivered in Q4 2026. Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri, noted the significance of this order in strengthening their technological partnership with Prysmian and their leading role in the offshore market.

(PRESS RELEASE) TRIESTE, 21-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Fincantieri S.p.A., one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups, announces that its Norwegian subsidiary Vard, has inked a significant contract with Prysmian Group, the global leader in energy and telecoms systems, for the design and construction of a cable-laying vessel. The contract is valued at approximately 230 million euros.

This marks the third cable-laying vessel that Vard will construct for Prysmian Group, following the “Monna Lisa,” currently under construction, and the “Leonardo da Vinci,” delivered in 2021. With this addition, the vessel will enhance Prysmian Group’s already extensive fleet.

The new cable-laying vessel will be an evolution of the Monna Lisa class, boasting impressive specifications. It will have a length of approximately 185 meters and a breadth of about 34 meters. The vessel will be equipped with advanced cable installation solutions, including three carousels with a total capacity of 19,000 tonnes. This positioning will make it one of the industry’s top cable loading capacity vessels, reducing transportation time from the factory to the project site and enhancing overall project efficiency.

With a bollard pull exceeding 180 tonnes, the vessel will be capable of executing complex installation operations, including simultaneous cable lay and burial for up to four cables, utilizing various ploughs. This versatility will optimize offshore operations. The vessel will feature state-of-the-art DP3 positioning and seakeeping systems and is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, commented on the order: “This order strengthens our technological partnership with Prysmian: this is the third unit we have built for this prestigious client after the ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ and the ‘Monna Lisa’. A further important signal of the leading role that Fincantieri is playing in the offshore market.”
