Increased space, comfort and convenience promised with new ÖBB Siemens Desiro ML trainsets

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Mobility Austria has secured an order from ÖBB for an additional 27 electric trainsets from the Siemens Desiro ML series, as part of ÖBB’s efforts to renew its fleet and invest in modern trains for inner-Alpine transport. The new trains will offer increased space, comfort, and convenience on inner-Alpine routes when they become operational in 2025. They will have a maximum speed of 160 km/h, a train length of 75 m, and a seating capacity of approximately 220, and feature a real-time passenger information system, free Wi-Fi, and the Siemens ETCS train protection system trainguard 100/200/300 OBU.

The move is part of ÖBB’s ongoing efforts to update its fleet and invest in modern trains for inner-Alpine transport. Already having ordered 246 Desiro ML trainsets, with over 200 in service throughout Austria, this new order will provide passengers with increased space, comfort and convenience on inner-Alpine routes once the trains become operational in 2025. This investment is expected to make rail transportation more attractive than private transport for passengers and commuters.

The new trains will be three-car trainsets, with a maximum speed of 160 km/h, a train length of 75 m, and a seating capacity of approximately 220. They will offer up to 24 spaces for bicycles and 2 wheelchair spaces. There will be 6 access doors per side and the train will include 2 toilets, one of which will be barrier-free with a baby-changing table. The trains will also feature automatic air conditioning, power outlets for each row of seats, and a modern real-time passenger information system displayed on screens. Passengers will have access to free Wi-Fi and the Siemens ETCS train protection system trainguard 100/200/300 OBU. The onboard Railnet portal will also be available for passengers.
