(PRESS RELEASE) LUXEMBOURG, 11-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Investment Bank Group has approved €7.9 billion in new financing to support technological innovation, critical infrastructure, sustainability projects and international partnerships.

The financing was authorised by the Boards of Directors of the European Investment Bank and the European Investment Fund. The approved operations cover areas including artificial intelligence, deep tech, digital connectivity, pharmaceutical research and development, water management, clean energy, sustainable transport, housing, education and business finance.

A major part of the package includes €3 billion under TechEU, aimed at strengthening Europe’s technological leadership. The funding will support broadband connectivity and pharmaceutical research and development in Germany, as well as energy-efficient and intelligent lighting in the Netherlands and life sciences, including biotechnology, across the European Union.

The European Investment Fund Board also approved support for equity agreements backing EU-based funds focused on artificial intelligence and deep tech, reinforcing the EIB Group’s role in helping European innovators scale, compete globally and develop strategic technologies.

Nadia Calviño, President of the EIB Group, said the projects approved this week support investment in areas where future security and prosperity will be built. She said the financing will help innovators scale up, compete internationally and strengthen Europe’s technological edge.

The EIB Board also approved financing for a range of projects across the European Union. These include water management, social infrastructure and sustainable transport in France, including new trains and buses. Other approved operations include new schools in Finland, affordable housing in Slovenia, business finance in Italy and wind energy in Poland.

The EIF Board backed additional investments designed to support healthcare, clean energy, the circular economy and business competitiveness across Europe.

Outside the European Union, the EIB Board approved financing for Ukraine’s private sector and reconstruction efforts. The support will cover renewable energy, transport, digital infrastructure and businesses, as the EIB Group continues to treat Ukraine as a priority in its work to support resilience, essential services and economic activity.

Further international operations include financing for companies across the cocoa value chain in Côte d’Ivoire and road rehabilitation along the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor in Kazakhstan. These projects support broader EU efforts to strengthen global partnerships and reinforce the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy.

The financing decisions were announced ahead of the annual meeting of the EIB Group’s Board of Governors in Luxembourg, which brings together the finance ministers of European Union member states. The meeting is expected to focus on how the EIB Group can further support the European Union’s strategic priorities.

Through the newly approved financing, the EIB Group is aiming to advance investment in sectors central to Europe’s competitiveness, sustainability and resilience, while also supporting partner countries through infrastructure, business and reconstruction financing.

EIB Group

The European Investment Bank (EIB) Group is the financing arm of the European Union, owned by the 27 Member States, and one of the largest multilateral development banks in the world. In 2025, the EIB Group signed €100 billion in new financing and advisory services for over 870 high-impact projects under eight core priorities that support EU policy objectives: climate action and the environment, digitalisation and technological innovation, security and defence, territorial cohesion, agriculture and the bioeconomy, social infrastructure, strong global partnerships and the savings and investments union. Beyond long-term loans for large infrastructure, the EIB Group crowds in private investment for high-risk innovative projects and businesses, with a growing role in Europe’s markets for venture debt, venture capital, guarantees and securitisations.

The European Investment Fund (EIF) is the subsidiary of the EIB Group specialised in providing guarantees, securitisation and equity to improve access to finance for small and medium-sized businesses and startups across Europe. Acting as an anchor investor, through its extensive network of partnering banks and investment funds, the EIF mobilises private investment and nurtures the ecosystem of venture capital funds to support innovative European entrepreneurs.

In 2023, the EIF together with six Member States (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands) launched the European Tech Champions Initiative, a fund-of-funds to scale up innovative startups. To date, this initiative has already enabled the creation of 15 European venture capital mega-funds and scaled up 45 companies, including 12 unicorns (with more than €1 billion in capital).
