BASF-Backed Research Expands Recyclability of Polyamide-Based Packaging Films in 2024 Standards

(IN BRIEF) The 2024 recycling standards from the Central Agency Packaging Register (ZSVR) now recognize polyethylene (PE), polyamide (PA), and ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) high-barrier films as recyclable, thanks to research by BASF and the cyclos-HTP Institute. These films, commonly used in food packaging, are now deemed recyclable when specific adhesion promoters are applied. BASF’s research played a key role in this reclassification, which will help many polyamide-containing packaging structures meet recyclability requirements, advancing the industry toward more sustainable packaging solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 12-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The Central Agency Packaging Register (ZSVR) has updated its 2024 minimum standard for recycling-friendly packaging, expanding the list of recyclable materials to include polyethylene (PE), polyamide (PA), and ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) high-barrier films. These films, commonly used in packaging for sausage, cheese, and meat, are now classified as recyclable, marking a significant step in sustainable packaging solutions. Adhesive-laminated PE/PA film structures are also recognized as recyclable for the first time.

This update is based on research conducted by BASF and the cyclos-HTP Institute, demonstrating the recyclability of co-extruded PE/PA/EVOH high-barrier films and laminated PE/PA structures. The studies showed that these film structures can be recycled effectively when adhesion and compatibility promoters are used.

BASF’s Senior Manager Market Development Polyamides, Simone Schillo, highlighted that this reclassification ensures that a large proportion of polyamide-containing multilayer films now meet recyclability standards. Polyamides, known for their barrier properties and mechanical strength, allow for the creation of thinner films, helping to reduce material consumption and packaging waste.

For more information on the recyclability of polyamides and the detailed changes to the minimum standard, visit the ZSVR website.
