Siemens lays cornerstone for Erlangen Technology Campus as part of €2 billion global investment strategy

(IN BRIEF) Siemens has laid the cornerstone for a €500 million Technology Campus in Erlangen, Germany, as part of its €2 billion global investment strategy. Positioned as a flagship project of the Made for Germany initiative, the campus will become Siemens’ global hub for the industrial metaverse, combining AI, automation, and digital twins to optimize processes before implementation. The first construction phase will deliver a 7,000 m² logistics and automation center by 2027, followed by a power electronics innovation hub and manufacturing expansion by 2030. With 3,000 employees already active at the site, the campus will focus on next-generation converters and controls, strengthening Germany’s competitiveness in advanced technologies. Siemens emphasized sustainability in the project design, recycling nearly all demolition materials and committing to net-zero operations. Leaders including Bavarian State Minister Joachim Herrmann and Erlangen Mayor Dr. Florian Janik hailed the project as a blueprint for innovation, sustainability, and regional growth.

(PRESS RELEASE) ERLANGEN, 23-Seo-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens has laid the cornerstone for its new Technology Campus in Erlangen, Germany, marking a significant milestone in the company’s €500 million investment at the site. Positioned as a lighthouse project of the Made for Germany initiative, the Erlangen campus is set to become a global benchmark for the industrial metaverse, reinforcing Germany’s role as a leader in technology and innovation.

The project will be developed in phases. The first step involves the construction of a 7,000-square-meter logistics, services, and automation center, providing workspace for up to 300 employees by 2027. The second phase, planned for completion by 2030, will include a development and innovation hub for power electronics along with expanded manufacturing capacity. This facility will be dedicated to the next generation of converters and controls, enabling systems and machines to operate with greater precision, speed, and efficiency.

“The Siemens Technology Campus in Erlangen is a lighthouse project of the Made for Germany initiative because our colleagues at the location are a role model for Germany’s innovative power and competitiveness,” said Roland Busch, President and CEO of Siemens AG. “Here, we’ve got superior products and a radical approach to customer value coupled with a relentless focus on digitalization, automation and artificial intelligence. With these success factors, we’re securing Germany’s economic future. Siemens delivers. Now it’s up to policymakers to implement the necessary structural reforms.”

The €500 million Erlangen investment is part of Siemens’ global €2 billion investment strategy announced in 2023, of which €1 billion is allocated to Germany. By combining artificial intelligence, digital twins, and advanced automation technologies, the new campus is designed to establish Erlangen as Siemens’ global hub for industrial metaverse activities, enabling digital simulation and optimization of processes before real-world implementation.

The initiative has been widely welcomed by political leaders and local stakeholders. Joachim Herrmann, Bavarian State Minister of the Interior, remarked: “Siemens’ investment offensive is a clear signal for Germany, Bavaria and Erlangen as well as for the around 3,000 people working on Frauenauracher Strasse. The Siemens Technology Campus in Erlangen will be a blueprint for research and development as well as for the production of Siemens’ future-oriented technologies. It will drive the digital transformation and further strengthen Bavaria’s position as a leading technology region.”

Dr. Florian Janik, Mayor of Erlangen, added: “The Siemens Technology Campus is also a lighthouse project for Erlangen. It will further strengthen our city as a science and innovation hub and create a living environment for talents and companies. We’re proud to be a partner in this future-oriented project, which combines sustainability and digitalization in an exemplary manner.”

Sustainability is central to the project. The entire site is being developed as a net-zero location, featuring a green energy supply, innovative energy infrastructure, and energy storage solutions in partnership with the city of Erlangen. From the earliest planning stages, the site was designed and optimized using a digital twin to ensure maximum sustainability. During demolition of existing buildings, Siemens recycled 96% of the 12,800 tons of rubble for new construction while eliminating 70 tons of CO₂ emissions by powering all machinery exclusively with green energy.

With around 3,000 employees already engaged in production, R&D, and administration at its Frauenauracher Strasse site, Siemens’ expanded Technology Campus will strengthen Erlangen’s position as a leading European center for innovation and industrial transformation.
