Volvo Foundation Awards 2026 Research Grants to Scientists Advancing Understanding and Treatment of Cancer

(IN BRIEF) AB Volvo has announced the winners of the 2026 Assar Gabrielsson Foundation Prize, recognising achievements in both basic and clinical cancer research. Ketan Thombare received the award in the basic science category for his research into RNA modifications and their role in aggressive neuroblastoma, contributing to a better understanding of tumour biology. In the clinical category, Louise Carstam was recognised for her work on diffuse low-grade gliomas, providing insights into optimal treatment timing, while Ella Äng Eklund was honoured for her research on biomarkers and translational approaches, particularly in KRAS-mutated non-small cell lung cancer. Each recipient will receive SEK 100,000 in funding, administered by the University of Gothenburg. The prize, established in memory of Volvo co-founder Assar Gabrielsson, continues to support promising cancer research projects that may not yet have access to major funding sources.

(PRESS RELEASE) GOTHENBURG, 6-May-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — AB Volvo has announced the recipients of the 2026 Assar Gabrielsson Foundation Prize, recognising outstanding contributions in both basic science and clinical cancer research. This year’s awards go to Ketan Thombare in the basic science category, and Louise Carstam together with Ella Äng Eklund in the clinical research category. Each recipient will receive SEK 100,000 in research funding, administered by the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg.

Ketan Thombare has been recognised for his work exploring the role of RNA modifications in cancer biology, with a particular focus on high-risk neuroblastoma. His research provides new insights into how RNA-related mechanisms influence tumour cell identity, particularly in aggressive forms of the disease. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the biological processes driving cancer development.

In the clinical research category, Louise Carstam has been honoured for her studies on diffuse low-grade gliomas, a type of brain tumour often first identified through epileptic seizures in otherwise healthy young adults. Her work offers valuable guidance on treatment strategies, helping determine when early intensive intervention is beneficial and when a more cautious approach may be appropriate.

Ella Äng Eklund has also been recognised for her contributions to clinical research, particularly in the field of prognostic and predictive biomarkers. Her work focuses on improving treatment selection and advancing translational approaches that bridge laboratory research and clinical application. Her recent doctoral research examined KRAS-mutated non-small cell lung cancer, with the aim of translating scientific discoveries into tangible benefits for patients.

The Assar Gabrielsson Foundation, established in line with the wishes of Volvo co-founder Assar Gabrielsson, has supported cancer research since 1962. The foundation primarily provides funding for promising research initiatives that have not yet secured backing from larger funding bodies, helping to advance innovative studies with strong future potential.
