Vodafone Germany to Expand Solar Energy Use Across Network Sites, Aiming for CO2e Neutrality by 2025

(IN BRIEF) Vodafone Germany is launching an initiative to install solar panels at its mobile phone towers and regional data centers, aiming to achieve CO2e neutrality by 2025. The project will begin with 86 sites and expand to 200 by the end of this financial year. Along with other sustainable innovations, such as wind turbines and dynamic energy-saving modes, Vodafone is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and increasing the share of self-produced renewable energy.

(PRESS RELEASE) BERKSHIRE, 10-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Vodafone Germany has unveiled a new initiative to install solar power panels across its mobile network sites and regional data centers as part of its broader commitment to achieve CO2e neutrality by 2025. This ambitious plan will see all suitable locations equipped with solar panels by the end of 2025, significantly increasing Vodafone’s share of self-produced energy.

The project will begin with the installation of photovoltaic panels at 86 network locations, with each site having an output of 398 kWp. Working in partnership with solar power specialist Sonnenkraft, Vodafone aims to more than double the number of solar-powered sites to 200 by the end of this financial year. These panels will generate enough energy to charge an electric car nearly 28,000 times per year, supporting Vodafone’s mission to reduce its carbon footprint and promote sustainable innovation.

By integrating solar energy into its network operations, Vodafone is taking steps toward ensuring its mobile and landline stations can operate independently of the grid under optimal conditions, utilizing renewable energy sources based on weather and geographical factors.

This solar initiative is part of Vodafone Germany’s larger sustainability strategy, which also includes the deployment of small wind turbines at select mobile sites and a dynamic energy-saving feature that adjusts power consumption based on real-time usage. Since its implementation in 2022, the dynamic energy-saving mode has enabled Vodafone to conserve enough electricity to power up to 3,000 households annually. These initiatives underline Vodafone’s dedication to reducing CO2 emissions while maintaining high levels of operational efficiency.

By continuing to innovate and invest in green energy solutions, Vodafone Germany is reinforcing its commitment to both environmental sustainability and technological advancement in the telecommunications sector.
