(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 7-May-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — OMV is investing EUR 65 million in a new innovation center at its Schwechat site in Austria as part of the company’s long-term strategy to accelerate technological development and support its transition toward climate neutrality. The new OMV Innovation Hub Schwechat is expected to become a central pillar of the company’s innovation infrastructure, providing facilities designed to scale new technologies from laboratory research to industrial application.

Construction of the innovation hub has already reached approximately 55 percent completion, with the project progressing according to schedule. OMV expects the facility to be completed and commissioned during the first half of 2027. The company recently marked the project with a topping-out ceremony, highlighting a significant milestone in the development process.

According to OMV, the new innovation hub will play a major role in implementing its Strategy 2030 roadmap by strengthening the company’s ability to transform research concepts into commercially viable technologies integrated directly into production operations. The facility is intended to bridge the gap between scientific research, pilot projects and industrial-scale deployment.

Alfred Stern described the hub as a critical foundation for future innovation within the company. He said the infrastructure will allow OMV to develop technologies consistently along its value chain, from laboratories and pilot plants through to industrial-scale operations integrated into existing production facilities. Stern also said the investment demonstrates OMV’s commitment to Austria as a location for innovation and reflects the company’s structured and strategic approach to transformation.

The innovation campus will cover approximately 8,120 square meters and include laboratories, office space, meeting and event facilities, as well as a technical center capable of supporting up to 15 testing facilities. The project will also feature pilot plant areas equipped with enhanced safety standards and around 50 workstations designed to support collaboration between cross-divisional teams.

OMV said the new hub will bring together internal expertise, customers and strategic partners to accelerate innovation in key areas connected to the company’s future growth strategy. Research and development activities at the site are expected to focus on emerging sectors including biotechnology, green hydrogen, carbon dioxide utilisation and proprietary technologies designed to support sustainable industrial growth.

The Schwechat hub is expected to function as the technology accelerator for OMV’s wider innovation programme, which aims to consolidate innovation-related expertise, technologies and partnerships across the group. The company believes the facility will help generate new business models while supporting its carbon reduction goals and long-term profitability targets.

OMV added that the innovation center will contribute to the development of technologies capable of supporting both environmental sustainability and commercial competitiveness, aligning with the company’s broader objective of achieving lower carbon operations while maintaining industrial growth.
