Nirmal “Nims” Purja MBE, a multiple world record-breaking mountaineer, joins Inmarsat’s Ambassador Programme

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 10-Mar-2022 — /EuropaWire/ — Inmarsat (LSE: ISAT), the world leader in global, mobile satellite communications, has announced the launch of its formal Ambassador Programme by partnering with Nirmal “Nims” Purja MBE, a multiple world record-breaking mountaineer. Nims, Inmarsat’s new Ambassador, will be equipped with the company’s satellite connectivity solutions to keep everyone safe, secure and connected during his expeditions.

Inmarsat has provided Nims with communications support for three years during some of his biggest, record-breaking expeditions. These include his “14-Peaks” challenge – now a major Netflix documentary – and more recently, his winter ascent of K2. Inmarsat has also supported Elite Exped – a company, founded by Nims, specialising in delivering tailored guiding experiences on the world’s highest mountains. Today’s announcement formalises the relationship and looks to build on it for the years ahead.

Nims has used Inmarsat equipment comprising a highly robust and portable Cobham Explorer 710 BGAN terminal, which is Wi-Fi compatible with laptops, tablets and smartphones and an IsatPhone 2 satellite phone, which can be used to pinpoint location and call for emergency assistance.

During Nims’ recent K2 expedition, Inmarsat’s connectivity meant that he and his team could stay in contact with base camp. Throughout the next two years, Inmarsat will continue to provide the connectivity support needed as Nims embarks on several expeditions including Everest, Lhotse and K2.

Commenting on his experience Nims said: “After working closely with the company for the past three years, I am pleased to be joining Inmarsat’s Ambassador Programme. The ongoing support from Inmarsat has enabled me to connect to my team on the Big Mountains – whether I’m at Everest Base Camp and need to connect to the outside world or taking on K2 in winter – the Inmarsat kit has helped me, and my team, keep connected and safe.

“As I embark on new adventures and challenges in 2022, I am pleased to continue working with Inmarsat and look forward to using the Inmarsat kit this year with my team at Elite Exped on the Big Mountains including K2, Everest and Lhotse.”

Mike Carter, President of Inmarsat Enterprise, said: “We are excited to be formalising our relationship with Nims and welcoming him as an official member of the Inmarsat Ambassador Programme, following our three-year relationship. In remote parts of the world such as the Himalayas, where infrastructure does not exist or is limited, we are pleased to have been able to provide the suitable connectivity needed to support the adventure pursuits of Nims and other record-breaking mountaineers.

“Our connectivity – which operates on our resilient ELERA network – offers ultra-reliable voice and broadband data communications, meaning climbers can trust the BGAN terminal to provide always-on connectivity during expeditions. Through our Ambassador Programme, we hope to support the endeavours of the most skilled adventurers as they aim to explore some of the world’s toughest and remotest environments, and we are proud of the small role we have played in helping them break some of the world’s toughest records.”
