Maersk Takes Delivery of Tangier Mærsk and Accelerates Rollout of Next-Generation Mid-Size Container Ships

(IN BRIEF) Maersk has taken delivery of the first of six new 9,000-TEU mid-size container vessels, Tangier Mærsk, from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group in China, three months ahead of schedule. The vessel, equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of running on methanol, will begin its maiden voyage in Shanghai before entering service on Maersk’s TP15 route connecting East Asia with the U.S. Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal. The delivery forms part of Maersk’s broader fleet renewal strategy aimed at improving competitiveness and supporting its 2040 net-zero emissions target, with four sister vessels due later in 2026 and the final ship expected in early 2027.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 2-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — A.P. Moller – Maersk has formally received the first vessel in a newly commissioned series of six mid-size container ships, marking a significant step in the company’s ongoing fleet renewal programme. The handover took place at the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group shipyard in Jingjiang, China, where the vessel was officially named Tangier Mærsk.

The delivery represents the start of a broader rollout of this vessel class, which Maersk sees as an important contribution to maintaining operational efficiency, network reliability, and long-term competitiveness. According to Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding at Maersk, the arrival of Tangier Mærsk underlines the company’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and strengthening its position in key global trade lanes.

Each of the six vessels in this series has a capacity of 9,000 TEU and is powered by a dual-fuel engine capable of operating on methanol as well as conventional marine fuels. This propulsion configuration aligns with Maersk’s strategy to gradually transition toward lower-emission shipping solutions and reduce the environmental footprint of its operations over time.

Following its delivery, Tangier Mærsk will embark on its maiden voyage, with Shanghai as its first port of call. The vessel will then be deployed on Maersk’s TP15 service, a route linking East Asia with the U.S. Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal, serving customers with reliable trans-Pacific connectivity.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group completed the construction of Tangier Mærsk three months ahead of the originally agreed schedule, reflecting strong project execution and close cooperation between the shipbuilder and Maersk. Four additional vessels from the same series are expected to be delivered later in 2026, with the final ship scheduled for handover in early 2027.
