JYSK Advances Sustainability Strategy with Data-Driven Smart Store Concept Reducing Energy Use and Emissions

(IN BRIEF) JYSK has demonstrated that its Smart Store concept can significantly reduce energy consumption across its retail network, with tests showing potential savings of up to 25% per store. The initiative, tested over 18 months in countries including Denmark and Spain, focuses on optimizing energy use through automation, centralized monitoring, and data-driven decision-making across heating, cooling, lighting, and ventilation systems. A new Smart Store in Getafe, Spain, illustrates how these technologies are applied in practice, including advanced features such as weather-based heating controls that prevent unnecessary energy use. Beyond operational efficiency, the concept supports employee comfort and enhances the customer experience while aligning with regulatory requirements and sustainability commitments. JYSK has set ambitious targets to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than 50% by FY32, and early results already show measurable progress, with reduced emissions per store and overall emissions despite network expansion. As the Smart Store model is scaled across more than 3,400 locations, it is expected to play a central role in helping the company achieve its long-term environmental and efficiency goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) BRABRAND, 23-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — JYSK has reported significant progress in reducing energy consumption across its store network through the rollout of its Smart Store concept, with test results indicating potential energy savings of up to 25% per location. The initiative represents a key component of the company’s broader strategy to lower emissions while improving operational efficiency and in-store conditions for both customers and employees.

Over the past 18 months, JYSK has conducted trials in multiple countries, including Denmark and Spain, focusing on optimizing energy use across heating, cooling, lighting, and ventilation systems. The Smart Store concept is designed to introduce a more standardized and automated approach to energy management, leveraging data and centralized monitoring to ensure energy is used efficiently and only when required.

The results from these pilot projects show that existing stores can achieve average energy reductions of between 20% and 25% through improved system optimization alone. In addition, newly constructed Smart Stores are being designed with more efficient infrastructure, including reduced cabling requirements achieved through better integration of systems and technologies.

Anders Klestrup explained that the Smart Store model enables greater oversight of energy consumption at a central level, while also reducing reliance on manual processes at individual stores. By automating key functions and using real-time data, the system ensures that energy is deployed more precisely, supporting both cost efficiency and sustainability goals.

A new Smart Store in Getafe, opening on April 23, 2026, demonstrates how these innovations are applied in practice. One example includes the use of weather-based controls for heating systems. Instead of automatically activating heating early in the day, the system evaluates weather forecasts and adjusts accordingly, allowing natural temperature increases to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.

The Smart Store concept also supports compliance with regulatory frameworks such as the European Energy Efficiency Directive, as well as alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative. JYSK has committed to reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50.4% by the end of FY32, with store operations representing the majority of these emissions.

Progress has already been made toward these targets. By FY25, JYSK had reduced emissions per store by 9% compared to FY22, while total emissions across scopes 1 and 2 decreased by 1.2% despite the addition of more than 300 new stores during the same period. The Smart Store concept is expected to play a critical role in accelerating these reductions as it is implemented more broadly across the company’s network of over 3,400 stores.

Facts about the JYSK Smart Store concept:

  • The Smart Store in Getafe, Spain, opens on 23 April 2026
  • The Smart Store project was launched based on tests across several countries
  • The results from the test countries show that the energy consumption per store can be reduced by an average of 20–25% by optimising existing installations
