Telefónica Recognised by CDP for Seventh Consecutive Year as Global Leader in Sustainable Supplier Management

(IN BRIEF) Telefónica has been included on CDP’s Supplier Engagement Assessment A List for the seventh consecutive year, recognising the company as one of the world’s leading performers in sustainable supplier management. The telecom group is one of only ten European operators and one of 40 global telecom companies included among the 1,400 companies recognised by CDP for supplier engagement on climate action. Telefónica has reduced total CO₂ emissions across its value chain by 49% since 2015, including a 91% reduction in Scopes 1 and 2 operational emissions and a 34% reduction in Scope 3 emissions since 2016. The company updated its Global Supply Chain Sustainability Policy and Supplier Code of Conduct in 2025 to strengthen ESG standards, align with European regulatory requirements and improve climate-related supplier management. Telefónica’s approach includes requiring suppliers to follow its code of conduct, prioritising work with high-emission suppliers, promoting science-based targets, supporting CDP Supply Chain participation and integrating emissions, energy and circularity criteria into procurement decisions as part of its net-zero 2040 strategy.

The recognition highlights Telefónica’s environmental strategy across its supply chain and its continued work with suppliers to strengthen climate action. CDP, a non-profit organisation that manages a global environmental disclosure system for companies, cities, states and regions, evaluates how effectively companies engage their suppliers on climate-related risks, emissions reduction and environmental performance.

Telefónica is one of only ten European telecom operators and one of 40 telecom companies worldwide included among the 1,400 companies on CDP’s Supplier Engagement Assessment A List. Telefónica Brasil has also been recognised among the telecom companies included in the ranking.

The distinction reflects the importance of responsible supply chain management in Telefónica’s wider decarbonisation strategy. While the company has made significant progress in reducing emissions from its own operations, much of the climate impact across the telecom sector is linked to the broader value chain, including the production of goods and services purchased by the company and the use of its products and services by customers.

Telefónica has reduced its total CO₂ emissions by 49% across its value chain since 2015 and continues to advance towards its goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2040. Over the same period, the Group has cut its operational emissions, covering Scopes 1 and 2, by 91%, exceeding its 2025 target of a 90% reduction. It has also reduced Scope 3 emissions by 34% since 2016.

Maya Ormazabal, Global Director of Sustainability at Telefónica, said sustainability in the supply chain is essential to moving towards a more efficient, resilient and low-carbon economic model. She noted that Telefónica’s purpose of serving as a gateway to digital technologies for citizens, businesses and public administrations encourages the company to promote increasingly ambitious supplier standards, reduce climate transition risks and strengthen competitiveness.

CDP emphasises that environmental risk is also financial risk and that its effects are becoming more significant. Since a large share of corporate emissions is concentrated in supply chains, supplier engagement is a critical part of the transition towards a net-zero economy.

In 2025, Telefónica updated its Global Supply Chain Sustainability Policy and Supplier Code of Conduct to reinforce its framework for applying environmental, social and governance standards across its value chain. The update incorporates new European sustainability requirements, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and future due diligence regulations, while improving the company’s management model through a double materiality approach.

Telefónica’s supplier management model includes a requirement for all suppliers to adhere to the Supplier Code of Conduct, which integrates ESG criteria and decarbonisation requirements from the beginning of the contractual relationship. The company also prioritises suppliers based on their contribution to its carbon footprint, with particular focus on those responsible for the largest share of emissions.

The Group encourages key suppliers to participate in the CDP Supply Chain programme to improve transparency and climate performance. It also promotes the adoption of science-based decarbonisation targets through the Science Based Targets initiative, supporting coordinated climate action across the value chain.

Telefónica has also strengthened sector collaboration through initiatives such as the Carbon Reduction Programme, managed within the framework of the JAC sector initiative. Launched by Telefónica in 2023, the programme focuses on reducing emissions at product level and now includes more than a dozen participating telecom operators.

In addition, Telefónica is increasingly integrating ESG criteria, including emissions, energy use and circularity, into procurement processes. This supports a purchasing model in which environmental impact becomes part of business decision-making.

The company’s supply chain sustainability policy forms part of its broader Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce CO₂ emissions and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. Telefónica has also been recognised for the twelfth consecutive year as a global climate action leader through inclusion on CDP’s climate A List.
