Gasum Phases Out Proprietary Biogas Label Ahead of EU Sustainability Labelling Rule Changes

Gasum Phases Out Proprietary Biogas Label Ahead of EU Sustainability Labelling Rule Changes

(IN BRIEF) Gasum is discontinuing its registered “biogas label”, which has been used by some customers to show that products, services or gas-powered vehicles are linked to the use of biogas. The decision follows the European Union’s Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (2024/825), which allows sustainability labels only when they are established by public authorities or based on independent certification. Because Gasum’s biogas label is a proprietary label, it must be phased out under the new rules. National implementation of the directive is expected to begin on 27 September 2026, although a proposed six-month transition period would allow companies to renew packaging and avoid unnecessary product waste. In practice, only permitted labels may appear on packaging from 27 March 2027 onwards, subject to parliamentary approval of the legislative change. Gasum is asking customers to stop using the label across all relevant materials, including packaging, brochures, advertisements, websites, social media, store displays and vehicle branding, while continuing its broader work to promote biogas with customers and partners.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 4-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum has announced that it will discontinue the use of its registered “biogas label”, which has been used by some of the company’s customers to indicate that a product or service is produced with biogas or that an operation uses biogas as an energy source.

The label has been available to companies using biogas in the production of goods, as well as to operators of gas-powered vehicles. It has appeared in different customer materials and channels, including product packaging, brochures, advertisements, websites, social media, in-store product displays and vehicle branding.

Gasum’s decision follows the European Union’s Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (2024/825). The directive limits the use of sustainability labels to those established by public authorities or based on independent certification. As Gasum’s biogas label is a proprietary label, it will be phased out in line with the new requirements.

National implementation of the directive is scheduled to begin on 27 September 2026. From that date, the use of proprietary sustainability labels must be discontinued. However, the government proposal connected to the legislative change includes a six-month transition period to allow companies to update existing packaging and avoid unnecessary product waste.

In practical terms, only permitted sustainability labels may appear on packaging from 27 March 2027 onwards. The legislative change remains subject to approval by Parliament.

Gasum is asking customers that have used the biogas label to end its use within the timeframe set by the authorities. This applies to all forms of use, including packaging, printed marketing materials, online content, social media, store displays and vehicle-related branding.

Gasum thanked its customers for their cooperation and confirmed that it will continue working with customers and partners to promote the use of biogas, even as the proprietary label is discontinued.
