(PRESS RELEASE) BERLIN, 24-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Berlinale’s European Film Market (EFM) has announced that Morocco will be the “Country in Focus” for its 2026 edition, celebrating the nation’s rich cinematic legacy, internationally acclaimed filmmakers, and dynamic creative community. With a film culture that bridges Africa, the Arab world, and Europe, Morocco has become an increasingly vital force in global cinema and a long-standing participant in the Berlinale and EFM.

For decades, Moroccan films and filmmakers have had a strong presence at the Berlin International Film Festival, reflecting the country’s deep cultural roots and its commitment to storytelling that resonates across borders. The Country in Focus initiative, launched by the EFM in 2017, highlights key film regions each year to foster collaboration and showcase their creative industries. Following previous focuses on Mexico, Canada, Norway, Chile, the Baltic States, Italy, and Spain, the 2026 edition will shine a spotlight on Morocco’s evolving and vibrant film landscape.

“Moroccan cinema has a proud history of storytelling that resonates far beyond its borders,” said Tricia Tuttle, Festival Director of the Berlinale. “From auteurs like Nabil Ayouch, Faouzi Bensaïdi, Asmae El Moudir, Halima Ouardiri, and Maryam Touzani to a new generation of filmmakers, Moroccan voices bring originality, depth, and cultural resonance to the global stage. We are thrilled to celebrate this creative spirit at the European Film Market.”

The program will provide a platform for Moroccan film professionals to engage with international producers, distributors, investors, and other stakeholders across all genres—from arthouse drama and documentary to animation and television series. It aims to deepen industry collaboration while highlighting the country’s growing importance as a creative and production hub.

Morocco’s cinematic appeal extends beyond its filmmakers to its world-class production infrastructure. Its strikingly diverse landscapes—from the Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert to historic cities such as Marrakech, Ouarzazate, and Casablanca—have long attracted global productions. The country’s strong film policies, including a 30% cash rebate for foreign productions, multiple co-production agreements, and initiatives like Ateliers de l’Atlas that support emerging regional talent, have solidified its position as one of the world’s most dynamic film destinations.

“The Moroccan film and media landscape has reached a new level of international visibility,” noted Tanja Meissner, Director of Berlinale Pro. “It combines a thriving national cinema with openness to global collaboration, offering high production value, creative talent, and exceptional filming locations. Morocco stands out as one of the most compelling focus countries in recent years.”

Echoing this pride, Mohammad-Reda Benjelloun, Director of the Centre Cinématographique Marocain (CCM), added: “A land of storytellers and heritage, Morocco embodies how culture and coexistence shape a truly universal language—cinema. Being chosen as the Country in Focus in Berlin honors the creative vitality and professionalism that define our industry.”

The European Film Market 2026 will take place from February 12 to 18, 2026, as part of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival, offering global audiences and professionals an in-depth look at Morocco’s film sector and its growing international collaborations.
