(IN BRIEF) AFRY has partnered with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy in a non-exclusive agreement to support the deployment of BWRX-300 small modular reactor technology in Europe. The collaboration combines AFRY’s engineering and advisory expertise with GE Vernova Hitachi’s reactor technology, aiming to advance low-carbon energy solutions and strengthen regional capabilities. AFRY will also support the licensing process with Swedish authorities, helping adapt the technology to local regulatory conditions. The partnership is expected to contribute to positioning Sweden as a key hub in the emerging SMR value chain while supporting Europe’s broader energy transition.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 7-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY has entered into a non-exclusive collaboration agreement with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy to support the deployment of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) technology, strengthening efforts to advance low-carbon energy solutions across Europe.

Small modular reactors represent an emerging generation of nuclear technology designed to offer greater flexibility and efficiency compared to traditional large-scale reactors. However, despite their modular advantages, nuclear energy projects remain complex undertakings that require strong collaboration between industry players, as well as the integration of global expertise with local knowledge.

The partnership aims to combine GE Vernova Hitachi’s reactor technology with AFRY’s extensive engineering capabilities and regional expertise. As global reactor developers expand their presence in Europe, particularly in Sweden, the involvement of local specialists is seen as critical to adapting projects to national regulatory frameworks and optimizing implementation.

Jason Cooper, CEO of GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, emphasized that the collaboration reflects a broader ambition to build a robust industrial ecosystem around the BWRX-300. He highlighted the importance of fostering long-term partnerships, strengthening local capabilities, and ensuring that regional industries play an active role in the energy transition. He also pointed to Sweden’s strong industrial base and engineering expertise as key factors supporting the initiative.

Under the agreement, AFRY will deliver a range of engineering and advisory services, drawing on its long-standing experience in the energy sector and its established presence across Europe. In addition to technical support, AFRY will assist with the licensing process for the BWRX-300 technology with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, helping to navigate regulatory requirements and facilitate project development.

Elon Hägg, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Division Energy at AFRY, noted that the collaboration is intended to position Sweden as a central hub in the future SMR value chain. He added that the partnership connects local expertise with global innovation, contributing to the development of reliable and sustainable nuclear energy solutions across the region.

Through this cooperation, AFRY and GE Vernova Hitachi aim to accelerate the adoption of SMR technology while supporting Europe’s transition toward a more secure and low-carbon energy system.
