Vattenfall’s Women Lead the Charge: Progress and Promises for Gender Diversity in Energy

(IN BRIEF) In the midst of International Women’s Day celebrations, Vattenfall, a key player in the energy market, showcases its commitment to gender diversity and equality. With women outnumbering men in top-level management, including the CFO Kerstin Ahlfont, Vattenfall highlights strides made toward gender parity, moving from 24% to 32% female representation in leadership roles by 2023. Anchored by initiatives like Equal by 30, Vattenfall aims to achieve equal leadership, opportunities, and pay by 2030. Through events like the Women in Energy Week, Vattenfall emphasizes the importance of addressing gender-related issues and fostering inclusive environments within the energy sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 8-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Vattenfall’s CFO and EGM member, Kerstin Ahlfont, on the way ahead: “In 2018, Vattenfall signed Equal by 30, an international initiative working towards equal pay, leadership and opportunities for women in the energy sector by 2030, involving 13 governments and more than 130 organisations. I am proud of our progress because looking at female representation in leadership roles, we have moved from 24 per cent in 2018 to 32 per cent in 2023. More work is to be done, but we would like to celebrate our successes during International Women’s Week at Vattenfall this year by bringing awareness to the topics around women at work. The D&I Office has curated a special program for the week. I am excited to be personally involved.”

Female leadership at Vattenfall is strong. Earlier last year, our President and CEO, Anna Borg, received a prestigious award from Swedish business newspaper Dagens Industri. They declared her the most powerful business woman in Sweden. At the end of last year, TIME Magazine ranked her among the world’s 100 most influential actors against climate change. Women make all the difference and are paving the way for a brighter future for everyone. It is all of our women that are contributing to the overall success. Every great woman is a leader in their own right.

As a signee of Equal by 30, Vattenfall has committed itself to achieving equal leadership, opportunities and pay by 2030. Apart from the hard work of implementing systemic changes, it is vital for knowledge to start circulating and for “female” topics to take centre stage. This year’s Vattenfall Women in Energy Week leading up to International Women’s Day on 8 March has done exactly that and served as an occasion to address topics that matter: employee perspectives, female leadership, menopause and the workforce, inclusive recruitment, allyship, intersectionality and more. Kerstin Ahlfont played her part personally by joining in a session about progress towards gender diversity with Swedish multinational telecommunications company Telia, open to the public.
