Uniper Appoints Experienced Political Communications Leader Birgit Korte to Senior Spokesperson Role

(IN BRIEF) Birgit Korte will become Head of External Communication and Group Spokesperson at Uniper in early June 2026, joining the Düsseldorf-based energy company after serving as head of the press office at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Berlin. She will report to Florian Dötterl, Executive Vice President Corporate Communication & Governmental Relations. Korte has a background in media studies and journalism and has held senior communications roles in public administration, including at the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia, where she became Head of the Press Office and Editor-in-Chief in 2022. In October 2025, she moved to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, where she served as spokesperson for Federal Minister Katherina Reiche. At Uniper, she will succeed Georg Oppermann, who is retiring after 26 years in the energy industry. The appointment comes as Uniper continues to emphasize its role in secure energy supply and the energy transition, supported by its activities in power generation, gas trading, LNG imports, renewables, hydrogen, gas storage and hydropower.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 22-May-2026 — /EuropaWire/ —Birgit Korte will join Uniper as Head of External Communication and Group Spokesperson in early June 2026. Based in Düsseldorf, she will report to Florian Dötterl, Executive Vice President Corporate Communication & Governmental Relations. Korte most recently led the press office at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Berlin.

Korte brings extensive experience in journalism, political communication and public-sector media relations to her new role at Uniper. She studied media studies in Siegen and Bonn and earned a Master of Arts degree in 2014. After beginning her career as a freelance journalist, she joined the press office of the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2016.

Her responsibilities at the State Chancellery expanded over the following years. In 2020, she was appointed Deputy Head of the Press Office, before becoming Head of the Press Office and Editor-in-Chief of the State Chancellery in 2022. In October 2025, she moved to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, where she most recently served as spokesperson for Federal Minister Katherina Reiche.

Florian Dötterl said Korte’s communication expertise and broad professional background make her well suited to Uniper’s current needs, particularly given her familiarity with both the media landscape and the energy sector.

“Birgit Korte brings exactly the right mix of communication skills and extensive experience that we need at Uniper right now. Not only does she know the German and international media landscape very well, but she is also familiar with the energy sector through her previous roles. We are therefore very pleased that we have been able to recruit her, an outstanding communications expert, as department head within the Politics and Communication division,” said Florian Dötterl, Executive Vice President Corporate Communication & Governmental Relations at Uniper.

In her new position, Korte will succeed Georg Oppermann, who is retiring after 26 years in the energy industry. Dötterl thanked Oppermann for his long-standing contribution and his role in representing Uniper publicly, including during challenging periods for the company and the wider energy sector.

“Georg Oppermann has represented Uniper excellently in the media and in public, even during challenging times. I would like to thank him very much for that and wish him all the very best for this new chapter of his life,” Dötterl said.

Korte said Uniper plays an important role in ensuring secure energy supply in Germany and Europe and is closely connected to the transformation of the energy system. She said the move marks a new professional perspective after a decade in political communication at state and federal level.

“Uniper bears a great responsibility for ensuring a secure energy supply in Germany as well as in Europe and, as one of the industry’s most relevant companies, is at the heart of the energy transition. After ten exciting years in political communications at the state and federal levels, I am looking forward to this change of perspective and to helping shape Uniper’s unique role through communications in the future,” said Birgit Korte.
