(PRESS RELEASE) COLOGNE, 15-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — TÜV Rheinland is a leading global provider of testing, certification, and technical services as well as an authorized testing body for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources Agency. In January 2024, TÜV Rheinland successfully applied for Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF) accreditation on ISO 46001:2019 Water efficiency management systems – Requirements with guidance for use (WEMS). TÜV Rheinland can now provide auditing services to ensure that clients’ accomplishments in water sustainability management are properly presented.

Water resource management is one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This goal seeks to ensure the sustainable use of global water resources by 2030, including access to safe drinking water and sanitation for all. The Water Resources Agency of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan, introduced a water consumption levy on all large water consumers that use more than 9,000 kL a month during the dry season on February 1, 2023. From February 1, 2024 onwards, all new businesses with a planned daily water consumption of more than 20,000 kL must also obtain at least 50% of their supply from reclaimed water. The changes reflect how improvements in water efficiency are now gradually being incorporated at the legislative level. Water efficiency management system certification recognizes best corporate practices in global sustainability. Such certification also demonstrates an enterprise’s commitment to the environment, social responsibility, and sustainability.

The ISO 46001:2019 Water efficiency management systems requirements can help businesses improve their water efficiency in a systematic manner. The High Level Structure (HLS) provides businesses with a framework for seamless integration of different management systems. The setting and planning of goals, compliance, water use review, business activity indicators, water efficiency indicators, action plans, and other techniques are used to identify the potential for water recycling, significant water use, and opportunities for improving water efficiency. Water efficiency is improved and pollution reduced through reduction, substitution, and reuse.

ISO 46001 has extensive applications in water efficiency management in factories, commercial facilities, or throughout an organization. It is particularly well-suited to the electronics, optoelectronics, petrochemical, paper, and steel industries.

At the same time, the sustainable management of water resources is now a top global priority for the international community due to growing challenges pertaining to water resources. As a certified global partner of the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS), TÜV Rheinland draws on its own extensive review experience to assist businesses in the continuous improvement of their own sustainable water resource management. By actively promoting improvements to water management in the supply chain, TÜV Rheinland also encourages businesses to pay attention to environmental sustainability and social justice. The goal is to ensure the effective use of water resources, protection of ecosystems, and support of economic development in global communities.

As an independent, international third-party certification body, TÜV Rheinland has always striven to promote and improve sustainable water management by businesses in their actual operations. Sustainable water balance can be achieved by helping businesses establish a sound water management regime.

Having obtained TAF accreditation on water efficiency management, TÜV Rheinland now looks forward to collaborating with partners, clients, and stakeholders to bring about an even more sustainable future!
