(IN BRIEF) Volkswagen has introduced the fully electric ID. Polo GTI, the first battery-electric model in the 50-year history of the GTI brand. Powered by a 226 PS electric motor and featuring front-wheel drive, adaptive sports suspension and an electronically controlled differential lock, the compact electric hatchback accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds while offering a WLTP range of up to 424 kilometres. Combining classic GTI styling elements with advanced electric vehicle technology, the model represents Volkswagen’s latest effort to transition its iconic performance line-up into the EV era while maintaining practicality, dynamic handling and everyday usability.

(PRESS RELEASE) WOLFSBURG, 15-May-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new all-electric ID. Polo GTI, marking the first fully electric model in the 50-year history of the GTI brand. Presented during the 24-hour Nürburgring race, the new compact performance hatchback represents a major milestone for Volkswagen as it transitions one of its most iconic performance line-ups into the electric era.

The ID. Polo GTI combines traditional GTI styling and driving dynamics with Volkswagen’s latest electric vehicle technology. Powered by a 166 kW (226 PS) electric motor delivering 290 Nm of torque to the front wheels, the model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 175 km/h. Despite its performance-oriented focus, Volkswagen is positioning the vehicle as both a sporty compact hatchback and a practical everyday electric car.

The car is built on Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform and retains front-wheel drive, echoing the layout of the original Golf GTI introduced in 1976. To enhance driving dynamics, the ID. Polo GTI comes equipped as standard with an electronically controlled front differential lock, adaptive DCC sports suspension and progressive steering specifically tuned for the GTI model.

Volkswagen has also introduced a dedicated GTI driving profile activated via a button on the sports steering wheel. Once engaged, the system sharpens power delivery, adjusts chassis settings and steering responsiveness, and transforms the cockpit interface with unique GTI-themed graphics and colour schemes.

The electric hot hatch is powered by a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery offering a provisional WLTP driving range of up to 424 kilometres. Fast charging capabilities allow the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 24 minutes using DC charging stations with up to 105 kW charging capacity.

Visually, the ID. Polo GTI adopts Volkswagen’s latest “Pure Positive” design language while incorporating classic GTI cues. Exterior highlights include the signature red stripe running across the front fascia, illuminated Volkswagen badging, IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, a honeycomb-pattern lower grille and red motorsport-inspired accents integrated into the front bumper.

The silhouette maintains traditional Volkswagen GTI proportions, including a distinctive C-pillar design inspired by the original Golf. At the rear, the car features a split roof spoiler, illuminated rear lighting elements and a prominent black diffuser designed to reinforce its sporty identity.

Inside, Volkswagen continues the GTI heritage theme with a red-and-black interior layout, tartan-pattern upholstery inspired by historic GTI models and premium sports seats featuring integrated illuminated GTI logos. The cockpit combines a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit display with a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, both of which include optional retro-inspired display modes recreating the appearance of classic Golf I instrumentation and 1980s cassette-style media graphics.

The electric platform also provides increased practicality compared with previous combustion-engine Polo GTI models. Interior passenger space has been expanded, while luggage capacity increases to 441 litres and up to 1,240 litres with the rear seats folded. Volkswagen also highlighted the vehicle’s towing capability of up to 1.2 tonnes and optional bicycle carrier compatibility.

Optional features include a Harman Kardon premium audio system, panoramic roof, pneumatically adjustable massage seats and specially developed Bridgestone Potenza Sport tyres designed specifically for the ID. Polo GTI.

The model also incorporates Volkswagen’s latest generation of driver assistance technologies, including Connected Travel Assist with online data integration and traffic light recognition capable of automatically bringing the vehicle to a stop within system limits. One-pedal driving functionality has also been added for enhanced regenerative braking control.

Volkswagen plans to begin pre-sales in Germany this autumn, with pricing expected to start at just under €39,000.
