TotalEnergies’ Antwerp Battery Farm Project to Enhance Energy Security and Renewables Integration

TotalEnergies’ Antwerp Battery Farm Project to Enhance Energy Security and Renewables Integration

(IN BRIEF) TotalEnergies has launched a battery farm project at its Antwerp refinery in Belgium, featuring a 25 MW power rating and a 75 MWh capacity. The battery installation, supplied by Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, will be the company’s largest in Europe. It aims to stabilize power fluctuations in the national grid, ensure grid security, and facilitate the integration of renewable electricity. The project supports TotalEnergies’ commitment to battery energy storage systems and strengthens its presence in Belgium’s electricity value chain. The battery farm is expected to be operational by the end of 2024.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 15-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — TotalEnergies (EPA:TTE), a global multi-energy company with over 100,000 employees and presence in more than 130 countries as well as the world’s 3rd-largest low-carbon LNG company, announces that it has launched an ambitious energy storage initiative at its Antwerp refinery in Belgium—a battery farm project with a remarkable power rating of 25 MW and a capacity of 75 MWh. This installation, equivalent to the daily energy consumption of nearly 10,000 households, marks TotalEnergies’ latest endeavor in the field of battery technology.

Following the successful commissioning of four battery parks in France, providing a cumulative energy storage capacity of 130 MWh, this project in Belgium stands as the largest battery installation across Europe for TotalEnergies. Saft, the battery subsidiary of TotalEnergies, will supply the 40 Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion containers for the project, further solidifying the company’s position as a European leader in industrial-scale stationary storage.

Scheduled for completion by the end of 2024, the battery farm will play a crucial role in meeting the demands of the European and Belgian high-voltage transmission network on a 24/7 basis. It will fulfill various essential functions, including smoothing power fluctuations in the national grid, particularly during peak winter periods. Moreover, it will actively contribute to ensuring grid security by participating in the national grid’s reserve services. The installation will also facilitate the integration of more renewable electricity into the grid, supporting the growth of sustainable energy sources.

TotalEnergies recognizes the significance of energy storage in compensating for the intermittency inherent in renewable energy sources, thereby enabling their wider adoption. Batteries serve as a highly effective solution for grid balancing, thanks to their rapid deployment, small footprint, and high reactivity. These qualities address the evolving challenges faced by modern power grids.

Located within the Antwerp refinery site, the project will benefit from the available land and the existing grid connection. This development marks another milestone in TotalEnergies’ pursuit of battery energy storage systems (BESS), bolstering the company’s presence across Belgium’s entire electricity value chain, including production, storage, and supply.

“This first storage project in Belgium – our largest in Europe – will help ensure the stability of the Belgian and European grids to allow for greater development of renewable energies. It fits in perfectly with the multi-energy strategy of TotalEnergies. Backed by Saft’s battery energy storage system expertise, TotalEnergies intends to deploy storage solutions – notably in countries where we are actively developing renewable energies. With its energy storage solutions, TotalEnergies supports the growth of renewable energy production in the European energy mix,” said Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President Integrated Power at TotalEnergies.

TotalEnergies and electricity in Belgium

In Belgium, TotalEnergies is a major player in the entire electricity value chain. As an electricity supplier, the company has a portfolio of 450,000 BtC sites and around 100,000 BtB sites. To supply them with energy, TotalEnergies relies in particular on the Marchienne-au-Pont CCGT power plant (430 MW), the Plate-Taille hydroelectric dam (140 MW), and a wind farm located in the Belgian waters of the North Sea (300 MW). TotalEnergies is also developing solar and onshore wind projects, with a portfolio of 300 MW. In electric mobility, TotalEnergies has 5,100 recharging points in operation (35% on the road, 20% at home and 45% in offices) and 7,000 recharging points under development. TotalEnergies operates charging points in major Belgian cities such as Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent and Flanders.

TotalEnergies and renewables electricity

As part of its ambition to get to net zero by 2050, TotalEnergies is building a portfolio of activities in electricity and renewables. At the end of 2022, TotalEnergies’ gross renewable electricity generation installed capacity was 17 GW. TotalEnergies will continue to expand this business to reach 35 GW of gross production capacity from renewable sources and storage by 2025, and then 100 GW by 2030 with the objective of being among the world’s top 5 producers of electricity from wind and solar energy.
