TomTom Launches Area Analytics to Deliver Custom Traffic Insights for Cities and Organizations

(IN BRIEF) TomTom has launched Area Analytics, a new traffic analytics solution that enables users to define custom geographic areas and analyze traffic patterns over flexible timeframes with detailed hourly data. Built on the same data foundation as TomTom’s Traffic Index, the platform provides more localized and customizable insights into congestion, travel speeds and free-flow conditions across 77 countries. Designed for public authorities, planners, analysts and private organizations, Area Analytics supports data-driven decisions related to infrastructure investment, policy evaluation and sustainable mobility planning.

(PRESS RELEASE) AMSTERDAM, 14-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — TomTom has expanded its portfolio of mobility intelligence solutions with the introduction of Area Analytics, a new traffic analysis tool that allows cities, public authorities and organizations to study traffic patterns within any user-defined geographic area. The solution enables analysis across selected days, months or multiple years, with detailed hourly breakdowns that provide a clearer picture of how mobility changes over time.

Area Analytics builds on the data foundation of TomTom’s annual Traffic Index by giving users direct access to the underlying datasets in a more flexible and customizable format. While the Traffic Index offers standardized insights across more than 500 cities worldwide, Area Analytics allows users to move beyond city-level comparisons and focus on specific neighborhoods, corridors, regions or even entire countries. According to the company’s press release, this approach delivers more localized and actionable intelligence on congestion levels, travel speeds and free-flow traffic conditions.

The new platform is designed to support a wide spectrum of users. Public sector organizations can assess the impact of infrastructure projects and transport policies, while urban planners and traffic engineers can use detailed comparative data to support planning decisions. Consultants and analysts gain access to real-world mobility data that can be applied to economic modeling and risk analysis, and media organizations can examine how events, policy shifts or urban development projects influence everyday travel.

Area Analytics is powered by TomTom’s global traffic data ecosystem, which aggregates information from hundreds of sources and combines live and historical traffic data collected over multiple years. This enables users to compare trends across different locations or time periods, measure the effects of roadworks or regulatory changes, and track progress toward broader mobility and sustainability objectives.

The platform currently covers 77 countries, with additional markets to be added over time. Historical data is available from 2018 onwards and can be downloaded in multiple formats to integrate easily with existing tools and workflows. Users can analyze areas ranging from a single city block to an entire national territory, offering a high degree of flexibility for both local and large-scale planning.

TomTom emphasized that Area Analytics is designed for speed and ease of use. Through a web-based interface, users can generate reports within seconds, with results presented through intuitive visualizations such as heat maps and color-coded traffic maps that make complex patterns easy to interpret. Area Analytics is available via the TomTom MOVE portal, the company’s online platform for traffic analytics and mobility insights.
