The new MINI John Cooper Works GP will be taking roads in 2020

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 13-Feb-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Next year the new MINI John Cooper Works GP will be taking roads all over the world by storm, more powerful than ever before. The 4-cylinder turbo engine with more than 300 hp (220 kW) and motor racing technology by John Cooper Works promise a whole new dimension of performance. The new edition will feature MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology, making it the fastest and most powerful MINI ever to be approved for use on the road so far.

Suspension technology, aerodynamic properties, optimised weight will all be developed specifically for this model and will also be precisely adapted to the exceptionally high output of the new engine to create an optimum all-in package for thrilling performance characteristics.

The new version of the iconic British premium brand will be made available in 2020 aiming at particularly performance-oriented target groups. The new MINI John Cooper Works GP is planned to be produced in a very limited edition of just 3 000. Its predecessor has been produced in a limited edition of 2 000 vehicles, as was the MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit, which was introduced to the market back in 2006. Furthermore, according to Thomas Giuliani, VP Product and Launch Management, every one of its predecessors was completely sold out even before the official market launch.

Serial production development enters the next phase as whole-vehicle testing is going to be carried out on the race track in the course of the next few months.

The MINI John Cooper Works GP has initially been presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in September 2017 as a concept.

MINI has quite a tradition of leaving supposedly superior competitors behind it. In fact, it has three outright victories at the Monte Carlo Rally and the time achieved at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife lap by the predecessor model of the new MINI John Cooper Works GP is only 8:23 minutes, which is faster than what many sports car from the higher segments have achieved there.

Thomas Giuliani, Vice President Product and Launch Management:

“The fastest MINI in our brand history – which now goes back 60 years – is an expression of pure racing passion. We are well aware of the enormous fascination exercised by the MINI John Cooper Works GP, not just from the euphoric reactions to the concept vehicle but also from past experience: after all, every one of its predecessors was completely sold out even before the official market launch.”
