Telia Norway Completes Nationwide 5G Rollout, Boosting Data Traffic by 102% with 44% Less Energy

(IN BRIEF) Telia Norway has completed the nationwide rollout of its 5G network, reaching 99% population coverage by December 2024, four years after its initial launch. This expansion has spurred a 102% increase in data traffic while reducing energy consumption per terabyte by 44%, thanks to the efficiency of 5G spectrum and smart power-saving measures. Telia topped Norway’s operator rankings in early 2025 with an NPS of 829. Despite forecasting a doubling of network traffic by 2026, Telia plans to cap its electricity usage growth at 7% and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, maintaining its network on 100% renewable power since 2020.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 26-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Telia has become Norway’s first operator to deploy a nationwide 5G network, achieving full population coverage by December 2024—just four years after activating its inaugural 5G base stations in Lillestrøm. The rollout has driven a 102% surge in mobile data traffic while cutting energy usage per terabyte by 44%, delivering both enhanced customer experiences and environmental gains.

By early 2025, 5G traffic comprised nearly half of all data carried on Telia Norway’s network. The network’s superior speed, ultra-low latency, and strengthened security have fuelled substantial growth since 2022. Yet, thanks to the inherent efficiency of 5G spectrum and operational optimisations—such as scheduling base stations to enter low-power “sleep” modes during off-peak hours—overall electricity consumption has risen much more modestly.

“5G spectrum moves data far more efficiently, enabling significant energy savings,” explains Georg Svendsen, Head of Infrastructure at Telia Norway. “Coupled with intelligent power-management strategies, we ensure our customers enjoy a seamless experience without wasting resources.”

Independent benchmarking by Rohde & Schwarz placed Telia Norway at the top of operator rankings in early 2025, earning an NPS score of 829 out of 1,000—among the highest globally. Looking ahead, Telia expects its network traffic to double between 2022 and 2026, yet has pledged to restrict its total electricity usage increase to just 7%. The company also aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, building on its achievement of operating on 100% renewable energy since 2020.
