Metso’s Concorde Cell and TankCell Technologies Chosen for Barrick’s Lumwana Expansion to Optimize Copper Processing

Metso’s Concorde Cell and TankCell Technologies Chosen for Barrick’s Lumwana Expansion to Optimize Copper Processing

(IN BRIEF) Barrick Gold Corporation has chosen Metso’s Concorde Cell™ flotation technology for its Lumwana expansion project in Zambia, integrating it with the TankCell® technology already selected for the operation. The combined flotation solution is designed to enhance copper recovery by improving flotation kinetics, fine-particle recovery, and concentrate consistency, particularly when processing complex orebodies. The selection reinforces Metso’s role as a key technology partner for the Lumwana project and follows an earlier agreement covering the supply of comprehensive concentrator plant equipment, with the Concorde Cell order booked in Metso’s 2025 third-quarter Minerals segment intake.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 19-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Metso has been selected by Barrick Gold Corporation to supply its high-intensity Concorde Cell™ flotation technology for the Lumwana expansion project in Zambia’s North-Western Province. The Concorde Cell units will operate alongside Metso’s TankCell® flotation technology, which had already been chosen for the project, forming an integrated flotation solution designed to optimize copper recovery.

The Concorde Cell is Metso’s advanced forced-air pneumatic flotation technology, engineered to process complex orebodies efficiently. When combined with TankCell® technology, the solution offers a robust and proven flowsheet capable of delivering improved metallurgical performance. The Concorde Cell is particularly recognized for its rapid flotation kinetics, strong recovery of fine and ultra-fine particles, and its ability to maintain consistent concentrate quality.

This integrated flotation configuration supports Barrick’s objective of maximizing operational efficiency and recovery rates at Lumwana as part of the mine’s expansion program. The use of complementary flotation technologies enables a more effective treatment of varying ore characteristics while supporting stable, long-term production performance.

Metso’s involvement in the Lumwana project builds on a broader equipment supply agreement announced in 2024, under which Metso was selected to deliver a comprehensive package of concentrator plant equipment for the copper operation. The Concorde Cell flotation equipment order was recorded in Metso’s Minerals segment order intake for the third quarter of 2025.
