Metso Innovates Mill Liners with Skega™ Life Rubber for Reduced Environmental Impact

(IN BRIEF) Metso has introduced a new rubber material, Skega™ Life, to its mill lining portfolio, offering up to 25% longer wear life compared to the previous premium rubber, Skega™ Classic. Skega™ Life is designed for grinding mills processing highly abrasive ores and is most beneficial in ball mills larger than 14 feet, AG, and SAG mills of 18 feet or smaller. This innovation aligns with Metso’s sustainability goals, reducing CO2 emissions and minimizing liner material in tailings. Metso is renowned for its high-performance mill liners and continues to pioneer advancements in the field.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 27-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Metso Oyj (HEL: METSO), a leader in sustainable technologies, end-to-end solutions and services for aggregates, mining, metals refining and recycling industries, is proud to introduce a groundbreaking addition to its mill lining portfolio: Skega™ Life rubber, designed to deliver up to 25% longer wear life compared to the existing premium rubber, Skega™ Classic. Developed in Metso’s state-of-the-art laboratory and rigorously validated through extensive field studies, Skega™ Life represents a significant step in Metso’s commitment to sustainability and safety. This innovation promises optimized throughput, increased uptime, and enhanced wear resistance, resulting in lower maintenance requirements. Skega™ Life is a part of Metso’s Planet Positive offering, enabling increased sustainability and safety, optimized throughput, and increased uptime due to improved wear resistance and lower maintenance.

Fredrik Johansson, Global Product Manager for Rubber and Poly-Met mill linings at Metso, expressed excitement about the introduction of Skega™ Life, stating, We are excited to introduce Skega™ Life rubber to our mill liner portfolio. The new rubber is specially developed to have a very good wear resistance in grinding mills processing high abrasive ores. It can be used anywhere where a customer has a rubber application, but it is most beneficial in ball mills larger than 14 feet, AG, and SAG mills of 18 feet or smaller.”

Mill liners play a pivotal role in the mining process, and Metso’s liners are meticulously designed by experts to align with customers’ production objectives and mill conditions, ultimately enhancing overall process reliability. Lars Furtenbach, Director of Research & Technology Development at Metso, highlighted the sustainability aspect, stating, “Mill liners play a crucial role in the mining process and Metso’s liners are always designed by our experts to meet the customers’ production targets and the mill conditions and enhancing overall process reliability. Field studies and tests have shown that our new rubber compound can have up to 25% longer wear life. The longer wear life reduces CO2 emissions and less liner material will end up in the tailings.”

Metso has established itself as a global leader in the development and manufacturing of high-performance mill liners, pioneering innovations such as rubber linings, Poly-Met™, Megaliner™, and Orebed™ mill linings. The company continually develops new products to support customers’ evolving and advanced processes.
