SEAT & CUPRA Positions Martorell as European EV Manufacturing Hub with Start of CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo Production

(IN BRIEF) SEAT & CUPRA has started production of the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo at its Martorell plant, marking the beginning of production for the Electric Urban Car Family and strengthening Spain’s role as a major European hub for electric vehicle manufacturing. The project, led by SEAT & CUPRA for the Volkswagen Group’s Brand Group Core, will bring four fully electric models from three brands to market, all produced in Spain and developed through a shared platform strategy designed to reduce complexity, lower costs, and make electric mobility more accessible. The launch follows more than €3 billion of investment in Martorell and supports the Volkswagen Group’s broader strategy to produce affordable, technology-rich electric vehicles in Europe for European customers. The ID. Polo will offer up to 454 km of WLTP range, while the CUPRA Raval will bring a sportier urban EV concept with around 450 km of range and a summer 2026 market launch.

(PRESS RELEASE) MARTORELL, 4-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — SEAT & CUPRA has started production of the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo at its Martorell plant in Spain, marking a major step in the Volkswagen Group’s push to make electric mobility more accessible across Europe. The launch brings the Electric Urban Car Family into series production, with four fully electric models from three brands to be produced in Spain as part of a shared cross-brand platform strategy.

The start of production positions Martorell as a key European hub for electric vehicle manufacturing and represents a defining moment in the transformation of SEAT & CUPRA. The Electric Urban Car Family is being led by SEAT & CUPRA on behalf of the Volkswagen Group’s Brand Group Core, bringing together shared engineering, platform efficiencies, and differentiated brand identities to serve the entry-level electric vehicle segment.

The official production launch event was attended by Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain; Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen Group; Thomas Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, Brand Group Core, CEO of the Volkswagen Brand and Head of the Supervisory Board of SEAT & CUPRA; Markus Haupt, CEO of SEAT & CUPRA; and members of the company’s Executive Committee.

Markus Haupt said the launch represents more than the beginning of production for two new vehicles. He described it as a milestone for SEAT & CUPRA and a demonstration of the company’s ability to help shape the future of mobility. He highlighted the more than €3 billion invested in Martorell and the cultural and industrial transformation that has prepared the site to electrify Europe from Spain.

The Electric Urban Car Family project is the first initiative of this scale led by SEAT & CUPRA for the Volkswagen Group’s Brand Group Core. Built on a shared platform, the project is designed to reduce production complexity and costs while enabling four clearly differentiated electric models for different customer groups. SEAT & CUPRA will also continue to support electrification from the Iberian Peninsula through further development of the MEB21 platform.

Thomas Schäfer said the project demonstrates how the Brand Group Core can use shared platforms and internal collaboration to deliver electric mobility at scale. He noted that the common platform strengthens competitiveness in the entry-level segment, generates €600 million in cost savings, and provides a basis for democratizing electric mobility across Europe.

The production of the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo also reflects a broader investment by the Volkswagen Group to make Spain a central hub for electromobility. Oliver Blume emphasized that the Electric Urban Car Family is intended to deliver attractive, technology-rich electric cars at more accessible prices, while reinforcing the importance of a strong European industrial base and a Made-in-Europe strategy.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the launch as a shift from cars “Made in Spain” to vehicles “Made by Spain,” pointing to the role of the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo in expanding electric mobility in Spain, Catalonia, and Europe. Salvador Illa, President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, also stressed the importance of making electric cars accessible beyond premium segments.

The Volkswagen ID. Polo brings one of Volkswagen’s most recognizable nameplates into the fully electric era. The model combines compact dimensions with everyday practicality, a clear design, and an entry-level positioning. It offers a WLTP range of up to 454 km and includes technologies such as Connected Travel Assist with automatic traffic light recognition, one-pedal driving, and vehicle-to-load functionality that can power external devices such as e-bikes.

The CUPRA Raval introduces a sportier interpretation of urban electric mobility. Measuring around four meters in length, the model features a dynamic silhouette, a driver-focused interior, 3D-knitted CUP Bucket seats, and dynamic light projections in the door panels. Built on Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform, the CUPRA Raval will launch in three editions and offer a range of around 450 km.

The CUPRA Raval is scheduled for market launch in summer 2026 and is expected to support CUPRA’s continued growth. Since its launch, CUPRA has sold more than 1 million vehicles, recorded its strongest first quarter in 2026, and reached its best-selling month in March 2026 as it moves toward its target of achieving a 3 percent market share in Europe.
