Vattenfall Secures Right to Develop 630 MW Nordlicht II Offshore Wind Project in German North Sea

(IN BRIEF) Vattenfall, a leading energy company, has exercised its right of entry to develop the N-6.6 offshore wind power project, also known as “Nordlicht II,” off the German North Sea coast. This decision comes as part of the tender process for a significant wind farm near the German island of Borkum. When fully developed, Nordlicht II will have a capacity of 630 MW, contributing to the reduction of Germany’s reliance on fossil fuels and promoting a transition to cleaner energy sources. In September 2022, Vattenfall exercised its right of entry for the N-7.2 project, “Nordlicht I,” located in the same area. Together, these projects will have a combined installed capacity of 1.610 GW, generating electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of over 1.7 million German households. The timeline envisions Nordlicht I connecting to the German electricity grid by 2027, followed by Nordlicht II in 2028. Vattenfall is committed to supporting the shift towards more climate-friendly production in key industries through these offshore wind energy initiatives.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 15-Sep-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — As part of the tender process for the construction of a large wind farm off the German island of Borkum in the German North Sea coast, Vattenfall has informed German authority that it is exercising right of entry to the project, thereby obtaining the right to develop and construct the wind farm.

The project, also called “Nordlicht II”, will fully developed have an output of 630 MW. In September 2022, Vattenfall exercised its right of entry for another project, located in the same area, the N-7.2 or “Nordlicht I”. With an combined installed capacity of 1.610 GW, the two projects can produce enough electricity corresponding to the yearly consumption of more than 1.7 million German households.

Following a final investment decision by Vattenfall, “Nordlicht I” can be connected to the German electricity grid sometime in 2027 and “Nordlicht II” in 2028.

“These projects are milestones on the path to enable fossil freedom. They will lead to a permanent reduction in Germany’s dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, offshore wind energy can make an important contribution to the conversion to a more climate-friendly production in some key industries. Facts on the N-6.6 wind power project:

• The project was originally developed under the name “Atlantis I”. Vattenfall acquired the project in 2017, but when a new offshore wind tendering system was put into place, the area was auctioned out again. Vattenfall holds the right of entry.

• The project is located 85 kilometres off the island of Borkum on the German North Sea coast.

• Vattenfall operates onshore and offshore wind farms in its markets with a total installed capacity of approximately 5.0 GW and annual electricity generation of 12.6 TWh. In Germany, Vattenfall operates the “DanTysk” and “Sandbank” wind farms.
