Southwest Scotland Harnesses Clean Energy from Vattenfall’s South Kyle Wind Farm

(IN BRIEF) Vattenfall has inaugurated the South Kyle Onshore Wind Farm in southwest Scotland, its largest onshore wind farm in the UK. Once fully operational, the wind farm will have a capacity of 240MW, equivalent to powering 187,000 homes annually. The project was developed and built by Vattenfall but will be owned by Greencoat UK Wind PLC. A Corporate Power Purchase Agreement was signed in 2020, ensuring that some of the wind farm’s power will be supplied to A.G. Barr, the famous drinks manufacturer. Vattenfall sees onshore wind development as a crucial opportunity to enhance energy security, combat climate change, and benefit local communities. The company has a growing onshore wind portfolio, with 5.5GW in its pipeline, including 500MW in the UK. The inauguration ceremony was attended by key representatives from Vattenfall, Greencoat UK Wind, and other organizations involved in the project’s construction. Vattenfall will provide a Power Purchase Agreement and asset management services for a minimum of 15 and 10 years, respectively. AG Barr’s facilities will now be exclusively supplied with electricity from the South Kyle Wind Farm.

With an impressive installed capacity of 240MW, equivalent to powering 187,000 homes annually, this wind farm is set to make a significant impact on the UK’s clean energy landscape.

Vattenfall, the developer and constructor of the wind farm, has transferred ownership to Greencoat UK Wind PLC, a leading London Stock Exchange listed investment trust. The inauguration ceremony, attended by esteemed guests including Vattenfall’s CEO Anna Borg and Laurence Fumagalli from Greencoat UK Wind, celebrated the collaboration of all organizations involved in bringing this impressive project to fruition.

Notably, a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement signed in 2020 ensures that a portion of the wind farm’s power will be dedicated to supplying A.G. Barr, the renowned drinks manufacturer known for its iconic beverage, Irn Bru.

The South Kyle Wind Farm joins Vattenfall’s expanding portfolio of onshore wind projects, further solidifying the company’s commitment to clean energy solutions. With a robust onshore wind pipeline totaling 5.5GW across various markets, including 500MW in the UK, Vattenfall aims to grow its onshore wind fleet even more. Greencoat UK Wind PLC, the acquiring entity, specializes in investing in and owning operational onshore and offshore wind farms throughout the United Kingdom. With ownership stakes in 46 operating wind farm assets and a net generating capacity exceeding 1.6GW, Greencoat UK Wind PLC is dedicated to sustainable energy initiatives.

Following the commissioning of the South Kyle Wind Farm, Vattenfall will provide a 15-year route-to-market Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and oversee asset management on behalf of Greencoat UK Wind for a minimum of 10 years.

Vattenfall’s renewable energy portfolio has previously supplied electricity to AG Barr’s facilities across the UK. However, with the completion of the South Kyle Wind Farm, AG Barr will now receive its electricity exclusively from this remarkable clean energy source.
