The Royal Government of Cambodia and VINCI Airports mark the soft-opening of the full refurbished passenger terminal at Sihanoukville airport

Rueil-Malmaison, France, 29-Jun-2018 — /EuropaWire/ — To mark the soft-opening of the full refurbished passenger terminal, a ceremony was held today at Sihanoukville airport. Attending the event were the Secretary of State in charge of Civil Aviation, the Under Secretary of State for Tourism, the Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, along with Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of VINCI Concessions and President of VINCI Airports.

In 2017, Sihanoukville airport reported exceptionally sharp growth of +115%, welcoming 338,000 passengers. The extension and renovation of the terminal are part of the $150-million+ development program scheduled to be rolled-out in anticipation of traffic growth in the coming 5 years, as Sihanouk becomes an increasingly popular seaside resort. The main works involved the increase of the building surface by 80% (now totaling 4,800 sq.m), its total revamp (in particular at the check-in area, boarding lounge, and baggage claim zone), and the installation of new equipment including the Baggage Handling System (BHS).

In addition to the enhanced overall comfort deriving from the facilities enlargement, passengers will take advantage of the openings of new food & beverages outlets operated by local and international brands.

Another major project will soon be launched and aims at extending by 800 meters the airport’s runway to reach 3.3 kilometers. Once completed, the airport will accommodate on a regular basis bigger aircraft and flights from farther markets, especially off the Asian region.

Praising the cooperation with Cambodian authorities, Nicolas Notebaert says: “Today’s ceremony marking the commissioning of Sihanouk International Airport’s new terminal reflects the successful partnership between The Royal Government of Cambodia and VINCI Airports. Thanks to this fruitful and trustful teamwork, we are actually taking a new step in our journey to develop Sihanoukville airport so that it contributes to unlocking the economic, touristic and social growth potential of the Kingdom’s entire seaside.”

VINCI Airports has a 20-years history of supporting the dynamic economy and tourism industry of Cambodia through its operation of the country’s 3 airports and its support (working alongside the Cambodian government) for Les Artisans d’Angkor, a social enterprise dedicated to traditional Khmer crafts employing 1106 people and providing a living for around 5,000 families.
