Terna Initiates €38 Million Project to Enhance Electricity Grid in Caserta and Naples

(IN BRIEF) Terna, under the leadership of Giuseppina Di Foggia, embarks on a significant project to revamp the electricity grid in certain areas of Caserta and Naples, with an investment exceeding 38 million euros. The initiative aims to diminish the impact of electrical infrastructure on the land while bolstering the grid’s resilience, security, and service quality for local businesses and households. Part of a broader local grid development plan, the project entails constructing a new 220 kV section within the existing Santa Sofia Electrical Substation, along with installing five new underground cable connections to replace over 9 km of overhead power lines and 36 pylons. This endeavor, aligned with the 2019 National Transmission Grid Defence Plan, seeks to resolve infrastructure interference and enhance the reliability of electricity transmission services. Landowners in the affected areas can access plan documents at various offices and provide feedback within specified timelines.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 18-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The Minister of Environment and Energy Security has started the process to approve Terna’s project to restore electricity grid in certain areas of Caserta and Naples.

The company, led by Giuseppina Di Foggia, will invest more than 38 million euro in the project, which will make it possible to reduce the impact of electrical infrastructure on the land. It will also increase the local grid’s resilience and security, as well as the service quality for businesses and households.

The project falls under a broader local grid development plan that involves building a new 220 kV section inside the existing Santa Sofia Electrical Substation. With five new underground cable connections installed in the branch which includes the Santa Sofia substation and the lines south of the Maddaloni railway station, it will be possible to take down more than 9 km of overhead power lines and a total of 36 pylons, freeing up approximately 37 hectares of land.

The project took shape after a round of intense and productive discussions with local institutions and falls under the 2019 National Transmission Grid Defence Plan, which aims to resolve existing electrical infrastructure interference and make the electricity transmission service more reliable.

People and, specifically, land owners in the areas affected by the new project, will be able to read the plan documents at the offices of the Minister of Environment and Energy Security, the Campania Region, and the Municipalities of Maddaloni in Caserta and Acerra in Naples. They can also submit their written comments to the Minister and Terna (for information) within the deadlines established by law.
