Ramboll Highlights Long-Term Reconstruction Work for Ukrainian Communities at Gdańsk Conference

(IN BRIEF) Ramboll is attending the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk to highlight how technical expertise in housing, energy, water, environmental services and municipal infrastructure can support Ukraine’s reconstruction. The company is involved in projects in Chernihiv and Mykolaiv that aim to provide permanent housing, public buildings, medical facilities and community support for people affected by the war. Ramboll is also contributing to energy resilience through district heating modernisation in Kyiv and other municipal energy projects across Ukraine. The company said recovery must go beyond replacing damaged assets by creating safer, more efficient and more durable infrastructure. Its work combines engineering, design review, procurement support, quality supervision, local collaboration and philanthropic activities, including technical support delivered through Engineers Without Borders Denmark.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 26-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Ramboll is highlighting the role of technical expertise in Ukraine’s long-term reconstruction as public authorities, investors, businesses and development partners gather in Gdańsk, Poland, for the Ukraine Recovery Conference on 25 and 26 June.

The engineering, architecture and consultancy company is presenting its work across housing, energy, water, municipal infrastructure, environmental services and public buildings, arguing that recovery must extend beyond immediate repairs to create safer, more resilient communities for the future.

Ukraine’s reconstruction challenge remains extensive. A joint assessment by the Government of Ukraine, the World Bank Group, the European Commission and the United Nations estimates that recovery and reconstruction could require almost USD 588 billion over the coming decade.

Ramboll said that behind this figure are communities in need of functioning homes, schools, public facilities, heating systems, water networks and local infrastructure. The company’s approach combines technical advisory services, project delivery support and philanthropic involvement in areas linked to long-term recovery.

Peter Heymann Andersen, Group Chief Commercial Officer at Ramboll, said the company’s engagement in Ukraine is rooted in supporting communities affected by war and conflict while applying expertise where it can contribute to practical rebuilding efforts.

Housing and community recovery form a central part of Ramboll’s current work. Through initiatives funded by the Danish Foundation for Ukrainian Reconstruction, the company is supporting projects aimed at delivering permanent homes for internally displaced people and families affected by the war.

In Chernihiv, Ramboll is involved in the design and construction of new residential buildings and a kindergarten with capacity for 200 children. The projects are intended to provide more than temporary shelter by helping families rebuild stability, dignity and community life.

Søren Brøndum, Senior Director at Ramboll Buildings and head of the company’s Ukraine task force, said housing projects must combine safe homes with local cooperation, transparent allocation procedures and lasting social value.

Ramboll is also supporting housing and community projects in the Mykolaiv region. These include prefabricated wooden homes, public buildings and medical centres designed to be adaptable, scalable and responsive to local needs.

The company’s role covers project management, legal and technical advisory, design reviews, procurement coordination, quality supervision and support for transparent allocation processes. Beneficiaries are selected through a points-based screening process that follows national legislation and incorporates additional criteria developed with local authorities.

Ramboll said reconstruction must also address the infrastructure Ukraine will depend on over coming decades. Modernising district heating systems can improve efficiency and reduce reliance on natural gas, while upgraded water and wastewater networks can strengthen reliability. Energy-efficient public buildings and carefully planned housing can also support longer-term community recovery.

Jean-François Quillard, Business Development Manager at Ramboll Energy, said the company’s contribution is intended to combine urgent support with the technical capabilities needed to create durable social value.

Ramboll has built experience in Ukraine’s energy sector through feasibility studies, district heating projects, biofuel combined heat and power plants, renewable energy initiatives, procurement support and municipal utility implementation programmes.

In Kyiv, the company is providing implementation support and works supervision for a major district heating modernisation project under municipal utility Kyivteploenergo. The system serves millions of residents and is being upgraded to improve reliability, lower natural gas consumption and address war-related damage.

Additional energy-related work includes district heating and municipal energy projects in Lutsk, Zhytomyr, Rivne and Mykolaiv, as well as technical advice related to biomass, renewable energy, energy efficiency and resilient heat supply.

Ramboll’s involvement also includes philanthropy through the Ramboll Foundation. In 2025, the company contributed in-kind hours through corporate volunteering programmes alongside financial support from the foundation.

This included support for Engineers Without Borders Denmark, which provided technical assistance to strengthen critical infrastructure and facilities in Mykolaiv Oblast in cooperation with local NGOs and stakeholders.

As recovery partners meet in Gdańsk, Ramboll said Ukraine’s needs remain urgent and complex, requiring close cooperation between communities, technical specialists, humanitarian organisations, funders and public institutions. The company’s focus is on helping convert immediate needs into deliverable reconstruction projects that can strengthen local resilience over the long term.
