National Grid donates to the Peak District National Park Authority to help in its battle against moorland fires

Fire truck is ‘ thank you’ for support during work on Woodhead Tunnel

LONDON, 1-12-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — National Grid has made a donation to the Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA) to help in its battle against moorland fires.

The organisation, which has recently replaced cables inside the Woodhead Tunnels, stepped in to help after learning how much harm moorland fires can do to the local environment and wildlife.

David Smith, an Investment Delivery Engineer for National Grid, said: “Wildfires can break out unexpectedly in the Park and are responsible for a great deal of damage to the local landscape. We hope that our donation puts the Peak District National Park Authority in a position to mobilise quickly when fires start.”

The donation has helped the PDNPA purchase a number of essential pieces of fire fighting equipment, including a new Ifor Williams trailer, two portable FASTANK water containers and new wheels for the Park’s Argo Centaur all-terrain vehicle.

Fiona Draisey, PDNPA Ranger, said: “We’re grateful to National Grid for this kind donation, which has enabled us to make much-needed purchases for the park. The equipment will help us serve the whole park and has already been in use, proving what a great investment this is for the area.”
